Fanbase Press’ ‘Quince’ Named Among Top Progressive and Female-Created Comics of 2017

Fanbase Press is both honored and proud to share the news that the publisher’s recently released graphic novel, Quince, has been named among the top progressive and female-created comics of 2017. Featured by two comic book media outlets celebrating some of the best comics and graphic novels of 2017, both The Mary Sue and Comicon.com highlighted Quince for the series’ themes, values, and incredibly talented creative team (Sebastian Kadlecik – creator, Kit Steinkellner – writer, Emma Steinkellner – artist, Valeria Tranier – translator).

Comicon’s list of the 8 Most Progressive Comics of 2017 included such popular comic titles as Dark Horse Comics’ Once and Future Queen, DC’s Mister Miracle, and more.

As described by the website itself, the “Most Progressive” Award is designed to honor excellence in comics that present a world we recognize and life as lived reflected in storytelling, including diversity in race, creed, religion, orientation, ability, and perspectives. While there are many books from 2017 worthy of attention, this year Comicon.com chose to focus on fictional works that integrate progressive themes in a way that has the potential to influence trends in indie and mainstream comics.

Comicon.com explained their decision to include Quince in this year’s list was because the title “deals with struggles that are personal to [Lupe], like body shaming, anxiety, and depression. Artist Emma Steinkellner, captures every unglamorous emotion of being in high school without falling back on clichés, and the book’s therapeutic positive message about asking for help is handled with honesty and warmth.”

The Mary Sue’s Favorite Female-Created Comics of 2017 also included Quince and its creative team among some of the top talent in the comic book industry, including Bitch Planet’s Kelly Sue DeConnick, Animosity’s Marguerite Bennett, and more.

As The Mary Sue stated in regards to Quince, “The world doesn’t have nearly enough Latina superheroes, and while Marvel has got one with more of a big name, Lupe is a superhero that I think a lot more of us can relate to.”

Fanbase Press encourages our readers to check out all of the incredible titles and creators on these two prestigious lists and wishes to thank both Comicon.com and The Mary Sue for their recognition of Quince. In addition, Fanbase Press extends its gratitude to the creative team behind Quince for all of their dedicated and passionate work and for allowing Fanbase Press to be a home to this extraordinary and impactful title.

Quince is a 15-issue comic book series that follows a year in the life of Lupe, a 15-year-old girl who discovers that her quinceañera brings with it a super cool party . . . and superpowers. Her quince powers only last as long as she’s fifteen, so over the course of this rollercoaster year, we follow the adventures of Lupe as she figures out what it really means to be a hero.

Emphasizing diversity, family, and female empowerment, every issue of Quince is currently available on ComiXology in both English and Spanish. In addition, the English-language series has been collected into a printed trade paperback that is now available through Fanbase Press.
