I jumped at the opportunity to read what I believed to be a new offering from Kevin Eastman (TMNT) and Simon Bisley (Lobo, Heavy Metal, etc.), thinking it would be a fun trip back to the ’90s. Little did I know that it quite literally is a trip back in time, as it’s a republishing of something from Heavy Metal.

I really don’t have much to say about the comic itself, as I laugh out loud after typing that. Anyone who has read an Eastman/Bisley collaboration will understand why – lots of fun, but a serious lacking of depth, and I’m in no way knocking that. I remember picking up Melting Pot when I was in high school. From the writer of TMNT and the artist of Lobo and packed away in a plastic bag so no one could see the cover! My imagination went wild! The world they created was insane. Violence, nudity, sex, more violence. The atmosphere Bisley creates is stunning and rapturous, and Eastman’s plot joyously throws any hint of subtlety out the window where a raccoon foams at the mouth while rabies tears it apart.

Eastman calls Fistful of Blood a parody of the famous Leone/Eastwood collaboration, and like the film, our hero says nothing at all – she also wears almost nothing at all and has breasts the size of watermelons, but her aim with that gun is spot on! What is she shooting? Zombies. It’s exploitation to the nth degree. Like with Melting Pot, the art is glorious – and, apparently, touched up for the new release. Eastman’s knowing sense of humor is spot on in a way that makes Evil Dead 2 so much fun to partake in.

If you like this sort of thing, you’ll love it. I personally get a kick out of it.
