WonderCon 2014: Dark Horse and Its Fans Display Their Whedonverse Pride

At WonderCon 2014, no one in the ‘verse could stop the fans’ love for all things Joss Whedon.  On the sunny afternoon of the convention’s final day, a line of enthusiastic attendees wielding everything from Jayne hats and scythes to black trenchcoats, parasols, and stakes lined the upper floor of the Anaheim Convention Center, extending down the hall, outside the doors, and onto the outside patio, all while awaiting Dark Horse Comics’ Whedonversity Panel.  The excitement for not only the impending panel but for their love of the Whedonverse was palpable, and you couldn’t help but smile when a duo of fans began playing and singing the theme song to Firefly and a raucous rendition of “The Hero of Canton” (also from Firefly), until the entire line was joined in song and merriment.  (You know that you’re in for a great time when, even before a convention panel begins, the entire line of attendees trades the normal practice of pushing their way into the panel room for joyfully walking into the room with a hearty song.)

Comic book publisher Dark Horse Comics’ continuations of Joss Whedon’s cult favorites (Serenity, Buffy, and Angel & Faith) remain some of the most-talked-about comics in today’s market.  In Dark Horse’s Whedonversity panel, attendees heard the latest details on the upcoming arcs of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Serenity: Leaves on the Wind from the creative teams themselves.  The panel featured Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 10 writer Christos Gage and Serenity: Leaves on the Wind writer Zack Whedon and artist Georges Jeanty, providing fans with an inside look at their creative processes while doing their best to answer the fans’ curiosity as to where the Whedonverse is headed next. The panelists fielded questions from the audience, which included a discussion of whether Serenity: Leaves on the Wind will continue after its current six-issue run, the creators feelings towards the character of Dawn Summers, and, most importantly, and explanation of what “Shipping” is for the benefit of Zack Whedon.

The highlight of the panel came from Dark Horse Comics’ Publicist Aub Driver, who announced that an original graphic novel, written by James Marsters, would be released in July of 2014 featuring Buffy fan favorite, Spike.

All in all, the panel provided fans in attendance with not only an inside look at the minds of their favorite comic books’ creators, but the opportunity to join together in celebrating their geek pride for and admiration in all things Joss Whedon.
