A Love Letter to Darmok from ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’

Love is in the air at Fanboy Comics! In this magical month of romance and enchantment, the FBC Staff and Contributors decided to stop and smell the roses. In the days leading up to Valentine’s Day, a few members of the Fanboy Comics crew will be sharing their personal love letters to the areas of geekdom they adore the most.

Dathon (Nicholas D. Wolfwood, his prayers unanswered)[1],

Before (Temba, at rest)[2], you were (Isuldur, before the Ring)[3].  The Children of Tama saw the Federation as (Toothless, before his pain)[4], but you were (Tyrion at the Moon Door)[5], looking past (Mal and Jayne, when the money’s too good.)[6] to perhaps become (Poe and Fin, when the Force Awakened)[7].  You knew this might (Spock, when Genesis loomed)[8], but you (Luke, with the targeting computer off)[9].  Picard was (Gollum at the pool, with Master beckoning)[10], but you (Gold Leader in the Trench)[11]. (The Balrog on the Bridge)[12] awaited, but (By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet)[13], then Picard and Dathon at El-Adrel IV would be Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra!

But as (Luke, his tail cleared)[14], the Enterprise (Gollum at the Pit of Doom)! Dathon, you were (Scotty on the Jenolan)[16], (Westley at Miracle Max)[17], then Picard (Gandalf on the Morning of the Third Day, from the East)[18].  The Beast (Wedge, when Vader came)[19], and Picard (Zoe, when Kaylee was shot)[20], but (Spike says “Bang”)[21].  Before (Frodo at the Grey Harbor)[22], you and Picard (Kirk and Gorkon’s daughter, after the plot is foiled)[23].  Your crew (Temba, his eyes closed), but you (Faramir letting the Ring go)[25], and your efforts (Neo and the Designer at the City of Machines)[26].  You knew that (Tony Stark in Tennessee)[27], facing (Stronger than the Rock Biter’s Hands)[28] would (Anakin, his Braid Removed)[29], and that (Jack, flung into the future)[30] you would (Neo and Seraph in the Tea House)[31].  You (Captain America on the Plane)[32] for that ideal, and (Picard and Q in the courtroom, the last time)[33].

I (Aragorn King with the Hobbits at Minas Tirith)[34].  You (Sturm Brightblade on the Wall)[35], and I can only hope that (Glenn, who follows Cyrus)[36].

(See you, Space Cowboy)[37]

Erik
