‘Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir’ – Advance TPB Review

Poor, misunderstood Darth Maul.

When we think of all the Star Wars villains out there–particularly from the films–Maul is probably the worst of them all. I mean, think about it: we barely get to know Darth Maul’s back story in Star Wars: Episode I–The Phantom Menace. All we discover is that he died an apprentice. “Always two, there are,” Yoda says. “A master and an apprentice.” The comic book I just finished, however, Star Wars: Darth Maul–Son of Dathomir, gives an excellent inside look as to who Darth Maul really was and perhaps even who he could have been.

Our story begins in a prison far, far away, with Maul being held prisoner by his former masters, Count Dooku and Darth Sidious. Without giving too much away, the rest of the comic book contains multiple fight scenes between some of our favorite enemies. Watching Darth Maul and General Grievous fight gave me chills. Seeing Maul clash lightsabers with his old masters gave me goosebumps. Even the powers of Mother Talzin made me think some our favorite enemies would die, despite the fact that I knew that they lived after watching the movies and Star Wars: The Clone Wars series on Cartoon Network. Kudos to writers Aida Mashaka Croal and Matt Michnovetz on a story well written. They brought depth to a character I never cared about before reading this comic book.

Watching all of these enemies fight Darth Maul, however, made me wonder: could Maul have been persuaded to join the light side? Could he have been convinced to join our Jedi in the fight for balance amongst the force? After his masters betrayed him, this beautiful story makes me feel as though there was a side to Darth Maul we never got to know. I actually felt sorry for Maul by the end of this piece, mostly thanks to the help from stunning artwork brought to us by Juan Frigeri, Margo Vargas, and Wes Dzioba. Their pencils, inks, and colors brought life to a story filled with so much hate. That’s a task only a true Jedi can succeed at.

If only Darth Maul had been given that same chance, I absolutely think he would have been one of the greats . . . May the force be with you, Darth Maul!
