‘The Massive #12:’ Advance Comic Book Review

The Massive 12

The Massive 12Have you ever had a comic book make you cry? No, I don’t mean cry out of anger, because your favorite character lost his silly, red undies and looks stupid now. I also don’t mean I laughed so hard I cried. I mean how many times has a comic been filled with such raw, genuine emotion that you cried? That you put the book down and wanted to go out, do something, and be a better person. I can count maybe three or four times in my 15 years or so of reading comics that a comic book has truly made me cry. Brian Wood’s The Massive is now on that list.

This book is, month after month, simply amazing. Brian Wood writes some of the best comics on the market from big licensed properties like Star Wars and the X-Men to his own smaller, creator-owned titles like Mara, but, honestly, for me it is always those smaller stories that get me. The Massive has been heralded as a great environmental call-to-arms and an awesome indie comic, but for me it is more than that. It is a book about people, terribly flawed, messed up people who are trying to find something to hold onto, some ideal or mission to give them purpose. So, even though it is a book about life after the end of the world and it is filled with giant sharks and crazy, gun-toting mercenaries, at the end of the day it is a book about people dealing with problems. Sure, their day-to-day problems might be bigger than yours or mine, but it is not the scope or size of the problem that matters, it is the real, human way they deal with them or the ways in which they choose to evade their problems.

Why should you buy The Massive? Easy, it is amazing storytelling by the best writer and artists in the comics business. It is heartbreaking, inspiring, and incredibly intriguing. Plus, it has sharks, boats, guns, cancer, encroaching death ice, and all of the crazy stuff you could ever want in a comic, too. It is an example of how amazing comic books can truly be. Go, buy it now!
