Recently, I purchased a brand-spanking new PlayStation 4. I know, I know. What’s so new about a PS4? It’s been out for over two years now! Well, for me, it’s new. And, it has Darth Vader on the front, so it was worth every penny!

Since I’ve been out of touch with the gaming world for more than 2 years now (I’ve been playing with my Nintendo Wii since 2003…), I’ve recently had a chance to catch up on games I missed on PlayStation 3. One of those games is Tomb Raider.

Let me just start by saying that I missed me some Lara Craft. I remember loving the Tomb Raider movies that came out back in high school (for me at least), and the Lara depicted in PS3’s Definitive Edition is so badass, she gives Angelina Jolie a run for her money! Or maybe a run for her artifacts in this case?

Needless to say, I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to read Dark Horse’s very first issue of their new Tomb Raider comic book series, and just like with the video game I just played, Lara is young and ready to learn. Her powers may not be those of a superhero, but in this issue, she begins to strengthen her senses.  Her hearing, in particular.  That was always the best trait about Lara’s character: her eagerness to grow into the powerful woman she is.  If only we all had this sensibility . . .

As my first Tomb Raider read, I must commend writer Mariko Tamaki for his delicate script.  The story is simple so far, yet perfectly set up.  For me, the issue ended abruptly, but merely because I was intrigued the entire time.  I also enjoyed Phillip Sevy’s elaborate line art.  Put him together with Michael Atiyeh’s colors, and you have a beautiful-looking comic book.  Well done, team.

Without sounding sexual, I am afraid to admit that Lara Craft has raided my own life over the past couple of weeks.  One can only hope to continue to read up on the world’s greatest Tomb Raider each and every month going forward.
