Ragnarok is, essentially, the Norse apocalypse myth. It’s the foretelling of the final battle that results in the death of the gods: Odin; Thor; etc. In the Ragnarok comic, writer and artist Walter Simonson sets out to translate those myths into an epic fantasy story.

We follow Brynja and Regn, two highly skilled assassins, who are called upon to do a particularly dangerous job. While they’d normally embark on it together, Regn needs to stay home with their daughter Drifa while Brynja takes on the task alone. Only she’s not exactly alone. Before embarking on the quest, she recruits an entire army of rogues to join her—indicating that this is more than just your average, ordinary hit.

The story itself is fairly vague so far, but then, first issues often are. The main appeal of the comic, though, is the artwork. In particular, sweeping architecture in vivid colors, along with a variety of strange and detailed characters and creatures. It’s worth reading for the art, even if the story is a little sparse. It will be interesting to see how this one develops in subsequent issues.
