Things are really heating up now in the mob conflict that’s driving Trista & Holt. An ambush has resulted in the death of Holt’s driver and close friend Lou, and everyone’s trying to figure out what to do next. And, the web of intrigue that binds them all together continues to weave ever tighter.
There are a few things to look for in the Trista & Holt comics. One is the parallels with the original story, Tristan and Iseult. Different characters, places, buildings, etc. in the comic all have counterparts in the 12th century legend.
Another thing to look for is ’70s pop culture references. The story takes place in the disco era, and issues are peppered with everything from ’70s TV shows to commercials to hair and clothes.
Finally, keep an eye on the faces that Bergen uses in his signature photo art. Some of the characters in this story are created using photos of celebrities ranging from the ’40s and ’50s to the ’70s to the present day. Bergen recaps them all at the end of each issue, but it’s fun to look at some of the minor characters and say, “Hey, isn’t that . . . ?”
In general, the story is getting to be a lot of fun. The world it’s set in is really compelling, and though there’s a lot going on, it all blends together nicely. I’m very much interested to see where things go from here.
