‘Magpie #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

It’s difficult to say much about this first installment of Magpie from If? Commix. The adventure is only 8 pages long, so anything but the scantest plot description would involve some sort of spoiler. I’ll do my best, though.

The interesting thing is, the titular heroine, Magpie, doesn’t show up until the very end. Instead, we meet 3D Man. A low-powered superhero, 3D Man’s ironic lack of depth perception leads to his getting punched a lot and publicly humiliated a lot more. Eventually, we get to meet Magpie, a scantily clad female superhero and see where she fits into all of this, but for that, you’ll have to read the comic for yourself.

With words by Andrez Bergen and artwork by Frantz Kantor, Magpie promises to be a send-up of all sorts of superheroes, comics, and pop culture in general. The art is a detailed and colorful CGI style, which brings both the characters and the setting to vivid life. The story is silly and fun, with a touch of Bergen’s trademark noir thrown in for good measure.

Magpie #1 appears as part of Issue #7 of the Australian comic magazine Oi Oi Oi! Short though it is, it’s definitely worth checking out, and I look forward to seeing what Bergen and Kantor come up with in future adventures.
