Your Geeky Parent Guide to San Diego Comic-Con (Comic-Con@Home) 2020: Friday

San Diego Comic-Con is a five-day event, and we’re here to highlight some of the many virtual panels being provided as part of this year's Comic-Con@Home festivities. Along with geeking out with your kids over your favorite comics, TV, or film announcements, we’ll be sharing panels dedicated to highlighting the importance of storytelling, what we can learn from them, and how people might find a path in a similar field.

FRIDAY, JULY 24




DC@Home Day One
Time: 10 – 11 A.M.

A long list of DC talent will be attending this virtual panel to chat about what’s on the horizon for the iconic characters from DC Comics.

“Crazy” Talk: Mental Health, Pop Culture, and the Pandemic
Time: 10 – 11 A.M.

Something we all might need are support systems to get through the difficulties of a pandemic. This panel is dedicated to “discuss how pop culture fandom communities can help stave off social isolation and despair during this unprecedented public health crisis.” Panelists include forensic psychiatrists Vasilis K. Pozios, PhD. and Praveen Kambam, M.D., along with Heather Antos (senior editor, Valiant and Image), Bryan Edward Hill (DC Comics' Batman and The Outsiders, Netflix/DC Universe's Titans), Joseph Illidge (executive editor, Heavy Metal, Humanoids' MPLS Sound), and Patrick Tatopoulos (production designer, Batman v Superman, Zack Snyder's Justice League).

Cosplay – The Spice of Life!!!
Time: 10 – 11 A.M.

If your kids love to create characters and dress up, this panel will help you get “started in the world of cosplaying and all the fun you can have while doing it.” Panelists include costumer and charity volunteer Catherine M. Fisher, Steampunk expert and fabricator Bob Mogg, international cosplayer Loki Sanlok, and cosplayer and children’s charity volunteer Dan Moyer.

Lights, Camera, LGBTQI-dentity! Never Alone
Time: 10 – 11 A.M.

“YOU have the starring role in your own hero's journey--but the spotlight can be lonely. And Pop Culture Hero Coalition (@SuperheroIRL) stands united as you meet allies, mentors, and opposition along the way.” This panel will help attendees strengthen and celebrate their identity from vocalist Darren Hayes (Savage Garden), NOH8 founders Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley, and several others.

Reclaiming Indigenous History and Culture Through Comics
Time: 10 – 11 A.M.

“For hundreds of years, the history of the indigenous peoples of the Americas has been told by everyone but themselves, by people who often diminished and distorted it, and even suppressed their cultures and languages.” Panelists will share their creative works and talk about how they’ll reclaim their culture in the process.

Entertainment is Female: A Conversation with Hollywood Executives
Time: 11 A.M. – 12 P.M.

Whether you have females in your household or not, this panel will evaluate the importance of female inclusion in Hollywood stories, including “adapting comics and games to the big screen.”

Make Your Own Felted Friends
Time: 11 A.M. – 12 P.M.

“Families can learn how to make their own ‘felted friends’ (puppets) with crafts already around the house. A discussion about puppetry and performance art is included between crafting as well!”

Raina and Robin in Conversation
Time: 11 A.M. – 12 P.M.

This panel will let parents and kids see two top graphic novelists “discuss the art of creating graphic novel memoir, draw on camera, and take questions from their fans.” Panelists include Raina Telgemeier (Guts) and Robin Ha (Almost American Girl).

Think Big!
Time: 11 A.M. – 12 P.M.

Harley Salbacka, rep at Humanoids (former educator) discusses the role young-reader graphic novels play in education and libraries along with graphic novel librarian Tina Lerno, Children's Librarian Lauren Kratz, and Urban Legendz creator and animator Paul Downs. Moderated by Fanbase Press Founder Barbra Dillon.

Lucasfilm Publishing: Stories from a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Time: 12 – 1 P.M.

If you love Star Wars, then you’ll want to find out about new projects coming from a “galaxy far, far away.” This panel includes plenty of Star Wars creatives, while being moderated by Star Wars host Kristin Baver and Lucasfilm publishing senior editor Robert Simpson.

IDW: Draw a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle!
Time: 1 – 2 P.M.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fans will have the opportunity to see the co-creator Kevin Eastman, along with other creators, share “how to draw everyone's favorite ninja turtles while discussing the IDW TMNT comics.”

LMGI – Hollywood Location Scouts
Time: 1 – 2 P.M.

Traveling the world seems like a magical thing. Location scouts get to discover places like “Winterfell in Ireland, Skull Island in Vietnam, Hogwarts in England, and Wakanda in South Africa.” Families can learn the logistics behind being a scout and the hope you find the next great iconic stretch of sky.

Time: 2 – 3 P.M.

“Industry professional women artists address working from home during a pandemic and all the challenges they've faced.” Panelists include the The Simpsons director Debbie Bruce Mahan and Disney Animation artist Sherry DeLorme.

UnMasked: Rhapsody PR’s Behind-the-Music Panel
Time: 2 – 3 P.M.

For those who love music accompanied your favorite TV shows, get ready to uncover what’s “behind creating music for TV's most groundbreaking and thrilling programs.” Panelists have worked on shows such as Star Trek: Picard, Homeland, Fargo, Locke & Key, and more.

Get It On The Table: Designing Your Tabletop Game
Time: 3 – 4 P.M.

This panel is definitely for those interested in making their own tabletop games, where they can listen to advice, game theory, and “what games are moving the industry forward.

Time: 3 – 4 P.M.

Fans of Netflix’s The Dragon Prince will have the opportunity for a Q&A, see some skits performed, and get a look at what books are coming up next.

Time: 4 – 5 P.M.

If you’re craving Bob’s Burgers, then you’re in luck! You’ll get to watch never-before-seen footage and listen to the cast talk about the next season. Plus, you’ll have a chance to participate in a Q&A with the “Emmy Award-winning animated FOX series.”

Read Manga and Learn Classics Literature!
Time: 5 – 6 P.M.

This panel is dedicated for you or your kids who love books and have interest in the classics. “Join Manga Classics co-founder Erik Ko and English literature teacher Mike Barltrop to learn how to use Manga in learning!”

The Living Dead: Celebrating the Legacy of George Romero
Time: 5 – 6 P.M.

George Romero, an icon in horror and creator of Night of the Living Dead, was unable to finish his last story, The Living Dead. Horror fans will have the opportunity to listen to Daniel Kraus, an author requested by Romero’s widow Suzanne Desrocher-Romero to complete the story, who will also be in attendance, along with moderator Richard Newby (The Hollywood Reporter). This panel will discuss Romero’s legacy and the new book.

Hip-Hop and Comics: Cultures Combining
Time: 6 – 7 P.M.

“Curator and historian Patrick A. Reed (Depth Of Field Productions) presents a "visual mixtape" with an all-star cast of musicians, comic creators, and visual artists discussing the cross-generational impacts of these cultural crossovers.” This panel includes a huge list of creators, so you’ll be able to learn about the importance of storytelling and how it all comes together.
