Fanbase Press Interviews Brandon Rhiness on the Upcoming Comic Book, ‘Chainsaw Reindeer’

The following is an interview with Brandon Rhiness regarding the upcoming comic book one-shot, Chainsaw Reindeer, from Action Lab: Danger Zone. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Rhiness about the inspiration behind the comic, what he hope that readers will take away from the story and characters, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the upcoming release of your new one-shot, Chainsaw Reindeer, with Action Lab: Danger Zone!  For those who may be unfamiliar, can you tell us about the comic’s premise

Brandon Rhiness: Thanks so much! I’m so happy the awesome people at Action Lab liked my comic so much they wanted to publish it! Chainsaw Reindeer is an over-the-top, hilarious, shockingly violent story about a reindeer at the North Pole who’s sick of Santa’s abuse and finally snaps. After destroying his cruel master and the elves inhabiting his homeland, the reindeer grabs a chainsaw and begins a world-wide tour of destruction.

BD: What can you tell us about your shared creative experience in working with the creative team, and what (or who) were some of your creative influences for this project?

BR: I’m lucky in that I have a great creative team! I’d worked with everyone who was part of this project on other comics, so it wasn’t our first time working together. Artist Carlos Trigo is the artist on my comic, Ghoul Squad, and the colourist, PD Dedelis I worked with on Stargirl. So, we were already comfortable working with each other, and everything went smoothly.

I can’t really think of any creative influences for Chainsaw Reindeer. The whole premise was just me throwing all the “rules” out the window and just writing the coolest comic I possible could. There’s not a lot of “story” involved, but I guarantee it will be the funnest comic you’ve read in a long time. After the first few pages setting up the story, it’s all just the Chainsaw Reindeer going from country to country, killing everyone in his path and destroying famous landmarks.

I’ve even said that I made this comic to piss off English teachers. LOL. I didn’t care about story structure or character development. It’s all just awesomeness!

BD: Do you have plans to expand the Chainsaw Reindeer world into a larger comic book series?

BR: I don’t have any plans at this point to expand it, but who knows what the future will bring. Chainsaw Reindeer might be best left as a cultural anomaly that is never expanded on. LOL. However, if people really like it, you won’t have to twist my arm very hard to get me to do more! So, if you like the comic, write to the publisher and tell them you want more!

BD: What makes Action Lab: Danger Zone the perfect home for this comic?

BR: There’s a lot of great people working at Action Lab, and their Danger Zone series is perfect for my comic. I love that they’re willing to take a chance on newer creators and different types of stories instead of just sticking to classic superhero-type comics. They’re willing take risks on original stories and that makes them great! They have a lot of amazing titles in their catalogue and I’m thrilled to be part of their team!

BD: Are there any other projects on which you are currently working that you are able to share with our readers?

BR: I recently finished my first slasher/horror comic. It’s called Bunnyman vs. Sledge. Indie horror fans out there will likely recognize those characters from their respective movie series. I met the producer of the Bunnyman series and the producer of Sledge and they licensed me their characters to make a sort of indie movie version of Freddy vs. Jason. It turned out very well and will be available on ComiXology in the very near future. So, keep your eye out!

I’m also forging ahead in the movie world. I just finished writing and directing a stoner comedy film called Hot Box. We had the premiere recently and everyone loved it. There was so much demand we had to do a second screening!

I’m also very excited to announce that I’m shooting my next film, I’m Haunted, in October. On August 23rd, we’re launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise money for it. It’s about a young woman who thinks her apartment is haunted and begins a video blog to document the strange happenings as her world falls apart around her. It’s going to be great!

I’d be forever grateful if any of you awesome people our there were able to make a donation and become part of this wonderfully terrifying world I’m creating!

BD: Lastly, what would you like to tell fans who want to learn more about Chainsaw Reindeer and your other work?

BR: Chainsaw Reindeer will be in stores on September 11, 2019. It will also be on ComiXology. So, whether you’re a fan of print or digital comics, you’ll be able to get your hands on it. If your store doesn’t have it, let them know you want it and, hopefully, they’ll be able to order it. I’m sure it’s also available directly through Action Lab: Danger Zone on their website.

Chainsaw Reindeer is the most fun comic I’ve ever written. It’s such a fun, easy read that you’ll probably want to read it over several times!

I can’t wait to hear what people think about it. I’m expecting half the people to love it and half the people wanting me to hang for it!

Thanks so much for speaking with me!
