Fanbase Press Interviews AHOY Comics’ Tom Peyer on the Release of ‘Edgar Allen Poe’s Snifter of Blood’ and More

The following is an interview with AHOY Comics’ Tom Peyer on the upcoming release of Edgar Allen Poe’s Snifter of Blood #1as well as the recent release of the Snifter of Terror: Volume Two trade paperback. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Peyer about what readers will enjoy from these snarky parodies during the Halloween season, the bonus features included with each release, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: With the terrifically terrifying Halloween season approaching, AHOY Comics is getting into the spirit of things with its upcoming releases of Edgar Allen Poe’s Snifter of Blood #1 and the trade paperback of Edgar Allen Poe’s Snifter of Terror: Volume Two.  What kinds of snarky parodies are in store for these readers with these upcoming releases?

Tom Peyer: Well, in the first issue of Blood, we have a very funny Paul Cornell story, beautifully drawn by Russ Braun. It asks the burning question: What if the cat in Poe’s “The Black Cat” were a dog? Things would be very different, as you’ll see. We also have a feverish Dean Motter story with the provocative title, “Atlas Shrugged.” Upcoming issues will feature not one, but two mockeries of “The Cask of Amontillado;” two guest appearances by Sherlock Holmes; one “Tell-Tale Heart;” and another fine Monster Serials episode by Mark Russell and Peter Snejbjerg. That last one isn’t a Poe parody, but if you grew up associating sugary breakfast cereals with hideous murder-creatures, it’ll speak to you.

BD: With creators like Paul Cornell (Doctor Who) and Russell Braun (The Boys) attached to the new issue of the Snifter of Blood anthology series, what can you tell us about the shared creative process in bringing these stories to life?

TP: When I work with an experienced and gifted team like Paul and Russ, I try to stay out of their way and let them create. The best I can do is hover unobtrusively like Alfred the butler, just in case they need anything.

BD: As with all of AHOY Comics’ releases, there are many incredible extra features included with each project.  What can readers anticipate from these latest release?

TP: The Snifter of Terror collected edition has prose stories and poems from a list of writers and artists that includes Grant Morrison, Carol Lay, John Ficarra, David Schmader, Mariah McCourt, and over a dozen others. The text section in the first issue of Snifter of Blood has a werewolf story, a mind-bending spy tale, a weird romance, and a puzzle.

BD: At Fanbase Press this year, our #StoriesMatter initiative endeavors to highlight the impact that stories can have on audiences of various mediums.  How do you feel that Snifter of Blood’s and Snifter of Terror’s stories will connect with and impact readers?

TP: I just hope our comics let readers escape the clutches of reality for a while, and just enjoy a laugh. I think that matters now more than it has for a long time, for reasons too sad and obvious to go into here.

BD: Are there any other upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?

TP: AHOY’s next comic comes out October 7th; it’s Penultiman, a character comedy with a lot of superhero trappings, drawn by Alan Robinson and written by me. In November we’re launching Happy Hour by Peter Milligan and Michael Montenat; it deals with a near-future America where sadness is illegal and the punishment is severe. December sees the relaunch of the lovely and popular Second Coming by Mark Russell, Richard Pace, and Leonard Kirk. In January, The Wrong Earth, my series with artists Jamal igle and Juan Castro, returns.

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about Snifter of Blood #1, Snifter of Terror: Volume Two, and AHOY’s other titles?

TP: We have quite a hyperactive and appropriately flippant Twitter account run by Superfan Promotions honcho David Hyde: @AhoyComicMags.  And you can subscribe to our email newsletter to get the inside scoop weeks before the horrible normal people do. It’s written in a breezy, funny tone by Superfan’s talented Hanna Bahedry. Just go to our website, comicsahoy.com, and click the hard-to-miss link that says, “Sign up.”
