Fanbase Press Interviews Comic Book Creator Geo Brawn IV

The following is an interview with comic book writer/illustrator Geo Brawn IV.  In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Brawn about the inspiration behind his work, how he balances the writing and illustrative duties, what he hopes that readers will take away from his work, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: As a comic book writer and illustrator, what inspired you to create your own comics and graphic novels, and who have been some of your notable inspirations?

Geo Brawn IV: Wow, well, in my youth, I was a kid growing up in the age of superhero movies… Batman ’89 was a huge influence back then, and I even subscribed monthly to DC’s Batman comic.  I was so in love with the process, really, I started way back when, drawing out these consecutive storylines on 8.5″x17″ pieces of paper. Many of which I still have in a closet her at Brawn Manor. But as I got older, I was influenced more by the stories in the classic horror tales in EC Comics I had gotten a hold of from an old friend who saw the potential, I guess. I got really lucky with that. And then, my eyes were really opened in my late teens as I picked up Heavy Metal Magazine from a local book store, and I was like “YES! This is what I should be doing!”

BD: You have already released several titles, many of which fall into ongoing stories/universes.  For those who may be unfamiliar, what can you share with us about your various graphic novel titles and their shared universes?

GB: They are from a dark place in my mind, these stories. They are stories that delve into horror and fantasy, myths and legends, but also into histories of both ancient and not-so-ancient times. I really like to take them into different time periods and shake things up a bit. In my stories, the evil characters are never a single layer… The have many sides to them. And I love to show how they became who they are. They are dark, but that’s the fun part. It’s the story of fantastic monsters, but also the story of us as a people in various societies. I like to take science and the supernatural and find common ground and make it all make sense.

BD: What can you share with us about your creative process balancing the writing and illustrative duties? What do you hope that readers will take away from your work?

GB: In my mind, it’s all one giant story played out like a movie over a series. Each scene plays over and over in my mind as I work on any particular chapter. Rewinding over and over until it’s complete. I hope that, in the end, the readers can see what I envisioned in my “scenes.” Nothing thrills me more than when someone comes up to me and talks about what they read as if the characters of my stories are real people and how they related to them in a chapter. That really puts a smile on my face. They want to know what’s next for “Cherry Bomb,” Lilith, or “Kate Bennett,” and it’s great.

BD: If given the opportunity to expand your series into other entertainment mediums, in what format do you hope to see it adapted?

GB: In my head from day one, when I started my career with The Untold Chronicles and now with my new series, The Angel Codex, I still envision the same thing, really. I want to see these on a screen, coming to life, the characters being portrayed in all of their glory. The format has changed a little bit, though, as I used to want to see that happen on the big screen in a movie. But that’s a bit different now, as I can see these stories coming to life much better as series episodes. The stories are just too big for a 2-hour rollercoaster ride or even a trilogy. No, these stories definitely have expanded over the years. As these characters tell me their stories, now I can see them happening more on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Video and being handled much better in that process. One season after another and eventually even having characters crossing over from the various shows. I would love to see that happen soon.

BD: Are there any upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?

GB: I am, indeed. I finished the first book of The Angel Codex, Midnight Angel: Afterfall, and I’m working on the follow-up to it now, telling the story of Inanna in Book II, Genesis of Fate, telling the origin story of a goddess of sex and war, and also see where she ends up all the way into the future, as well as our mortal society along those same lines. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun seeing how it all comes down. Plus, we’ll see a few guest cameos from characters of my past books joining the party, as well.

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about your work?

GB: I’m featured on IndyPlanet.com, and they can also go to my website directly and see not only my work as an author and graphic novelist, but my other artistic endeavors there, as well.
