The following is an interview with musician Freelamour regarding the inclusion of her music in Spike Lee’s new Netflix series, She’s Gotta Have It. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Freelamour about how her music came to be a part of the series, her creative process, what she hopes that listeners will take away from her work, and more!
Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the inclusion of your music in Spike Lee’s new Netflix series, She’s Gotta Have It! For our readers who may be unfamiliar, what can you tell us about the premise of the series?
Freelamour: Thank you so much. She’s Gotta Have It is a series about a beautiful, struggling Brooklyn artist named Nola Darling who follows her own rules. She’s outspoken, complicated, progressive, unapologetic, passionate, and sexual. The show explores things like polyamory, gentrification, harassment, and body image through Nola’s relationship with her friends, her job, and her three lovers.
BD: The way that your music came to be included in the series is intriguing and exciting! What can you tell us about how you were selected for inclusion, next to iconic artists like Maxwell, Biggie, Jill Scott, and Stevie Wonder?
Freelamour: I was browsing through Facebook sometime in January of 2017, and a friend of mine had posted Spike Lee’s call for independent artists to submit their music for his upcoming Netflix series. I submitted my music and was contacted a few months later that my song, “Little Girl,” was selected. Spike said that he felt the song was made for that scene, and I, too, feel that it was.
BD: How would you describe your creative process in working on the music for the show?
Freelamour: I wrote the song in 2013 in my apartment in Brooklyn. It sort of poured out of me once I jotted down the words “Little Girl” on the piece of paper. I was going through my own inner healing at the time, and I had a new awareness around limiting beliefs that I had been holding onto since childhood. This was my way of expressing that experience – talking to my inner child.
BD: What do you hope that listeners (and viewers of the series) will take away from your music?
Freelamour: There is this whole other world within us, much deeper than we could ever imagine, waiting to be explored. We have the amazing ability to choose the kind of experience we want here on Earth and being aware of what thoughts and beliefs are guiding our experiences is key. Love and being yourself is EVERYTHING in this world.
BD: Are there any upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?
Freelamour: Absolutely! I plan to continue releasing music that is real and authentic until I’m old and grey. And, I have a delicious, organic, raw, vegan food bar called Raw and Nutty. It’s based out of Brooklyn, and I’m currently working on getting it into stores by summer of 2018.
