‘Ascender #6:’ Advance Comic Book Review

You could almost call this series Something Wicked This Way Comes, as just when you think Mira and her father are about to catch a break, something awful shows up. Or you could simply call it good storytelling.

We last left Mira and her father on Telsa’s boat fleeing Mother’s minions, but, in the fight to get away, Andy takes a spear to the chest and falls overboard. Telsa has no choice but to make a run for it and leave him behind, but she and Mila head into more danger. Things take an interesting twist when Andy is rescued and healed by Mother’s followers only to face the possibility of an even more horrific death at the hands of someone he once loved. Mother is now more focused than ever on finding the rebels, but is distracted by the news that a robot has landed nearby. Will she be able to catch Mila and her pet robot before they leave the planet?

The increasing danger ramps up steadily as the humans and Mother are at odds with one another.  I love that there are many surprises and twists, yet all of them are organic.  Mother, Andy, and Mila face great obstacles, and I’m enjoying
how they resolve them (or don’t).  This is an intense ride with engaging characters that you grow to care about very quickly. And since the story is only six issues in, it’ll be easy to catch up.

Which reminds me, we should be seeing a trade paperback soon, yes?
