‘Undiscovered Country #2:’ Advance Comic Book Review

In the opening issue of Undiscovered County, the series helmed by acclaimed writers Charles Soule and Scott Snyder, we saw a world completely changed. With the United States creating an isolationist society, the former world leader has become an dystopian nightmare that has been a virtual black box for decades, leading the rest of the world to wonder what has happened inside the walls of what America has become.

Inside the walls of the United States, the series focuses on an international group sent in to help acquire the cure to a deadly disease called the Sky Virus, which has been causing havoc all over the world. As they’ve entered the United States, a country that has not had international visitors in over thirty years, the group was saddled with complications. They were shot down instantly, their pilot is now missing, and they’re now on the run from the mysterious Destiny Man, a roving marauder that controls a portion of territory in this reformed country.

With all of those challenges, the second issue focuses on a member of the team who may have a lot more going on than meets the eye. With those who work inside America’s infrastructure laying out new plans, the focus becomes on uniting the international forces to help get the cure to the Sky Virus and getting out as soon as possible. Despite a divied opinion on how to get this done, the group looks to move onward, each with their own motives and plans to achieve.

I’m incredibly impressed with the world building of this series so far. Undiscovered Country has a vibrant and gorgeous world full of new species, biology, and an entirely new way of life. As the group moves farther into the United States, it will be interesting to see how much further this goes and how much has truly changed.

While Snyder and Soule have built this concept, it could not have been done without series artist Guiseppe Camuncoli. Also listed as the co-creator of the project, his work has been incredible, designing new and mysterious worlds, creatures, and environments to help make this story a reality. Helped by Daniele Orlandini, Matthew Wilson, and Crank!, this series is as beautifully drawn as it was creatively constructed.

This series is a testament to the power of collaboration, with each piece carefully crafted by very talented creators. This was a highly anticipated series when it was first announced, something likely hyped by the big names attached. But, thus far, it’s lived up to the expectations, slowly rolling out what could very well be a legendary series once all is said and done. Big names have equaled high quality, and I can’t wait to see where this series goes, and what the new version of America has in store for us.
