‘Firefly #12:’ Comic Book Review

A quick recap from the last issue: Ma Reynolds has taken over things on the Browncoat front, much to Mal’s chagrin. The crew is all finally reunited, just in time for the Second Unification War to really heat up. Love, war, weapons of mass destruction, disapproving mothers: Life is complicated for a space pirate with morals.

Mal and Zoe have a daring plan to stall the Second Unification War and prevent the deployment of the land burners. In a shocking turn of events, Mal finds himself in a new position, kicking off the next arc when we return to the ‘Verse in the new year.

Well, three arcs in, and Greg Pak’s been knocking it out of the park. While certain outcomes are predictable, seeing as this is set before Serenity, Pak’s managed to keep things fresh and interesting. There’s a lack of payoff for a particular moment from the previous issue, but I think that’s intentional to set up some extra personal tension for some. The end of this issue also hints at some new situations for some of our team.

Dan McDaid’s linework has also consistently impressed me on his run so far. There’s a mild difference between the pages inked by Vincenzo Federici and McDaid’s own work; McDaid’s work looks a bit more refined to me. Marcelo Costa and Jim Campbell are also true rock stars… the colors and letters have been top notch throughout this run, and I feel like I could praise them ad nauseum.

Overall, Year One of Firefly ends on a high note. Mal and Co. are in new places and circumstances. After a year of focusing on Mal and Zoe’s past, I’m hoping to see more focus on some of the other crew members in 2020.
