‘Blackwood: The Mourning After #2’ – Advance Comic Book Review

Blackwood is a wonderfully strange and absolutely charming series. It poses the following question: What if a group of modern-day, Breakfast Club-like, outcast college kids ended up at what is essentially Miskatonic University from the H.P. Lovecraft universe?

The first mini-series immediately threw this unknown world into chaos when the dean was murdered by a dark force. Our young collective had to deal with the shifting sands of dark magic and university politics without even understanding the ground rules. I felt there were a few plotting bumps in the first series, but The Mourning After has found its footing and voice, allowing it to become a more character-driven story as opposed to a beat-by-beat plot. With this in mind, it remains engaging moment to moment, with the end of each issue throwing down a really great cliffhanger that makes you want to read the next issue right away.

In this issue, our outcasts decide to go and rescue their recently murdered friend and fellow outcast from the morgue, with the hopes of resurrecting him. At the same time, the new dean and his staff of quirky teachers are dealing with a new force: another institution that delves into psychic phenomenon and dangers. By their garb, they seem almost like government officials, and they are there to investigate the death of the dean and the surrounding circumstances. They, of course, seem to have ulterior motives. There are also a couple of other C plotlines that are so bonkers and creepy… one dealing with a two-headed monkey!

There’s no reason not to check this series out, especially if you love Harry Potter-like mysteries or Cthulhu-inspired horror stories.
