‘Undiscovered Country #5:’ Advance Comic Book Review

With the Destiny Man hot on their heels, the international group of heroes tasked with infiltrating the walled-off United States has done what they came here to do: getting a mysterious key into the hands of an even more mysterious leader. Our group is a bit splintered, as many of the most talented minds in the world are doing everything they can to escape the throngs of the Destiny Man’s followers. Daniel and Lottie are working on their own to meet up with a potential ally who may provide deeper access into the secretive, dark world of the United States of America. With this strange, new world surprising them at every turn and the deadly Sky Virus terrorizing the globe, things only seem to be getting more complicated.

There’s so much to this story, and the tale of an isolationist superpower is something that really resonates with our current world. It’s hard not to read this series and see the parallels to everything around us. This helps this series to serve as an allegory for reality, which is both fascinating and a bit terrifying. As things continue and we delve deeper into the newly walled-off and changed America, it will be interesting to see how much more this fictional version of our nation will mirror our own.

Charles Soule and Scott Snyder are both visionaries in the comic book industry, creating incredible and legendary runs on some of the most iconic characters in the medium. But they seem to really shine when they can create something whole cloth, building from scratch something that is truly impressive. This series has been a sight to behold, with two friends and literary titans coming together to work on something they both passionately enjoy, allowing for it to breathe at its own pace and evolve as much or as little as they choose.

Just as Undiscovered Country‘s America changed as it became its own black box, the creative team has also gone through an evolution. Stepping away from the book is Daniele Orlandini, whose stunning inking and finishing work has helped make this series what it is. Taking his place is Leonardo Marcello Grassi, who has helped to keep this series running smoothly, working with co-creator and series artist Giuseppe Camuncoli to deliver some very impressive visuals.

I do want to get back to the premise for a moment. What a story can mean to someone – the reader, the creator, the retailer – is important for various reasons. While it might not all mean the same thing to each person, a good story makes an impact. Undiscovered Country is both brilliant and terrifying, giving us a farfetched reaction of something that is still very prominent in the world today, especially the United States. It’s unlikely that things would progress this far, but seeing a world leader go totally dark is a harrowing thought.

This series is something special. With an amazing concept, incredibly talented artists, and a team that is working like a well-oiled machine, Undiscovered Country is something to behold. With the first story arc nearing its conclusion, now is a great time to check it out.
