‘Ascender #14:’ Comic Book Review

Back on Sampson, Iffy and Andy are introduced to a small human population that has survived right under the noses of Mother and her minions. Iffy figures out why pretty quickly which is annoying to the village elders, yet timely. Meanwhile, Mila, Telsa, and the crew have made it to Phages where Mila is attacked by the “ghosts” who are really gas-based life forms, but they are in for a surprise. Quon has survived and become part of the machine-world.  Surprised to see a Bandit who has been damaged, he offers to repair the small, affable robot, hoping it might lead them to finding the Descenders. What happens next is pretty cool.

I think my favorite part of this series is how the characters of Bandit and Driller the Killer are woven into the story. They are the connective tissue between all of the other characters, and even though they are supporting characters, their actions are the catalyst for pretty much everything. Both are humorous, endearing, and very deadly. Killer often makes me laugh out loud, and all I want is a Bandit-type robot of my own (even though it would probably drive my dogs crazy).  Bandit and Driller the Killer represent humans at their best and their worst.

Nothing is ever quite what it seems, which is what makes Ascender, and any good story, rise above the rest. I can’t wait to get back to Mother, her sister, and how whatever they plan is going to bollix up the humans and their allies.  As usual, I’ll be waiting for the next trade volume to come out to buy for the hubby.
