‘Far Cry: Rite of Passage #1’ – Advance Comic Book Review

Ubisoft’s The Far Cry video game series has long been a staple in first-person shooters. Addictive open worlds, highly re-playable missions, and memorable villains are only some of the things that make the games great. But it’s the villains that fans usually demand to see more of. With the latest delay of Far Cry 6 and the possibility of not seeing it until September 2021, gamers are eager to get their hands on anything to pass the time.

Enter Far Cry: Rite of Passage #1 – The Power of Chaos. The three-issue series follows the latest newcomer in the antagonist role, President Antón Castillo, and the secondary antagonist, his 13-year-old son and heir Diego. Much has been made of President Castillo’s looming presence and his reign over the fictional country of Yara, and diving deeper into his character before the game emerges is an incredible experience for gamers.

Being the youngest antagonist in the series, Diego promises quite a different challenge and a very interesting study in the psychology of nurturing a future evil character. This comic series takes on that task and follows Diego as a main character on the day of his 13th birthday. His father uses the occasion to provide cautionary tales, ones that center around mistakes other leaders have made in their rule in order to carve Diego into a better dictator. In each issue, the tales revolve around the villains from Far Cry 3, 4, and 5.

Issue #1 – The Power of Chaos brings the reader into the world of Vaas Montenegro, a secondary antagonist from Far Cry 3. President Castillo imparts the highlights of Montenegro’s life, focusing on the events which shape him the most and guide him toward failure.

Getting an inside look at President Antón Castillo and Diego is the perfect way to introduce the characters and hype up the game to get fans and newcomers alike to place the game on preorder. While the storyline is fantastic and one that I’d love to see more of, it’s the art that steals the comic. The way it’s drawn, it’s as if the reader is inside a Far Cry game but with a comic book edge.

Looking forward to issues 2 and 3, we are promised more stories centering around Pagan Min from Far Cry 4 and fan-favorite Joseph Seed from Far Cry 5. If the next two issues are as amazing as this one, Dark Horse may just have to look at putting out a lot more comics around the game series. This gamer, for one, would not be disappointed.
