‘Hob’s Lane #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

How far would you go for love? Theoretical physicist John Tate is willing to travel between dimensions, if that’s what it takes to get his recently murdered wife back.

Hob’s Lane #1 starts out as a gruesome crime saga but quickly leads the reader into its true plot. DC Doug Kendal arrives with his partner on a scene of a gory murder, one that is unlike anything they’ve seen before. Minutes later, DC Kendal sees a man peeking out of his window and recognizes him as John Tate, an old school mate. As they catch up and discuss Tate’s deceased wife, it becomes clear that something isn’t quite right, and readers catch their first glimpses of Tate’s experiments.

Blue Fox Comics always delivers quality work, and Hob’s Lane #1 is no exception. The first of a three-issue series, everything about this comic is outstanding. The banter between DC Kendal and his partner is authentic and gives the reader a real sense of their relationship, while Kendal and Tate’s discussion takes us down a darker path, one filled with despair. Writer Martin Hayes does a phenomenal job of laying out the introductions to the story and characters.

As great as Hayes is, RHStewart backs it up with his art. The horrific murder scene in the beginning of the issue is something to behold. The more I stare at it, the more I see in the impeccable detail of the body and crime scene. Nothing is left to the imagination, and that can be extremely fun in a horror comic. As the issue continues, the panels are laid out in various ways that work so well for each page and scene. I was particularly fond of the vertical panels on pages 12-15. There is something so appealing about the layout and appearance of these pages and how well they work to progress the story and play with the art.

Hob’s Lane #1 is a fantastic start to what will surely be a fast-paced series with lots of horror to come. I’m excited to see where they take the story and what lies in wait for these characters.
