‘Leaving Megalopolis: Surviving Megalopolis #6’ – Advance Comic Book Review

With this six issue mini-series coming to a close, I wanted to start off this review by saying how awesome this series has been. Since reading the Kickstarter-funded Leaving Megalopolis a while ago, I have absolutely loved this world and those within it. With this second installment, this book has gotten totally insane, in the best way. While I’m sad to see it go, the ending of this series points heavily towards there being more of this in the future.

Let’s start off with the series as a whole: In the city of Megalopolis, something underground has turned the heroes of the city into murderous monsters who kill, eat, and destroy everything in their wake. While most have fallen in this new horrorscape, a few, including Mina, the protagonist of the last graphic novel, have survived and are attempting to take on their former idols turned worst nightmares.

Gail Simone, who is not only an excellent writer but an all-around amazing human being, is known not only for her great story-telling skills, but also her sense of humor. This is on full display here, as she’s ripping people’s limbs off in one panel and making jokes the next. She’s got an incredible knack for delivering a gripping plot, full of surprising laughs and incredible shocks. It’s an amazing mix of skills, and something that is a difficult balance to find. But it’s something that Simone seems to find with ease.

Jim Calafiore is no slouch, either. The art in this book is fantastic, and Jason Wright has done an amazing job with the color work to help. There’s an action sequence about three-quarters of the way through the issue that is a master class in silent storytelling, and every panel looks incredible, adding up to one of the better fights I’ve seen in a comic in recent memory.

This is a brutal, terrifying nightmare of a world, but full of snarky humor and some fantastic action. Simone, Calafiore, and Wright have hit on a very successful formula, and one I hope to see again in the future.
