‘Tomb Raider #9:’ Advance Comic Book Review

You guys, I’m obsessed!

Is anyone else playing Rise of the Tomb Raider that released this week for PlayStation 4?  No?!  Okay, I give you permission to stop reading this review right now and go and buy this video game!  I kid you not when I tell you that I came home from work this evening and got so lost in the game that my homework—this review!—is late!  (Sorry, Barbra…)

But I must also admit that Dark Horse’s Tomb Raider comic book series is good.  Like, really good!  Like, so good that it’s worth the distraction from staring at my TV screen for hours at a time.

Last month was a whirl wind of an issue, when Lara had to escape the clutches of Trinity.  After being trapped in a mental institution and tortured by a mysterious evil doctor, Lara just wants to find her best friend, Sam, before it’s too late…

In Tomb Raider #9, however, Sam has gone off the deep end in Germany, still possessed by the soul of Queen Himiko (which—if I’m not mistaken—took place in the Tomb Raider video game reboot before the newer Rise of the Tomb Raider game originally released for Xbox One last year).  Lara still blames herself for allowing Sam to get hurt on their expedition, and now as she gets closer to the truth, Trinity is also always close behind her every move…

Every month, I truly enjoy the continuous storyline brought to us by script writer Mariko Tamaki.  With what started as a video game, Tamaki has done an honorable job bringing Lara Croft and her adventures to life.  And with artwork from Phillip Sevy, including colors by Michael Atiyeh, this truly is a series to be reckoned with.  Now, maybe we can get this team behind a brand new Tomb Raider film franchise?  One can only hope.

In the meantime, I better get back to my game.  Lara Croft waits for no one…

Until next month,
