‘Snowfall #8:’ Comic Book Review

In this penultimate issue of Snowfall from Joe Harris and Martín Morazzo, the line between terrorist and patriot becomes very thin.

Rescued by Chloe, Assessor Davitika Deal turns her considerable strength and anger against the Cooperative. Now allies, each protects the other from the elements and Hazeltyne with Assessor Ishii in tow.  The White Wizard has infiltrated Hazeltyne Corporation, the heart of the Cooperative, but will he attempt to stop his daughter and what she has unleashed or try to save her?

Alternating between flashbacks and present day, we learn that Dr. Reasons (a.k.a. The White Wizard) was a loyal and hardworking employee of Hazeltyne, but he went too far in infecting his daughter with the ability to create snow.
Returning to the scene of his crimes, Assessor Black offers him the opportunity to continue his research all in the name of redemption. Will Dr. Reasons take it or bring the corporation to its knees? Or is it a trap? While he contemplate his decision, outside in the bitter cold, Assessor Deal protects Chloe and Ashii from the Enforcement Corps. Relentless, she might be able to hold off most, but not all.

This story is ramping up nicely towards its last issue. All of the characters are given choices that are morally ambiguous, so you never know what they will decide, because their own characters are so complex and well developed.  When they do make a choice, it is organic and feels right; however, it does get a tad confusing as to who has the real power here –  father or daughter – but that may be the point.  I also appreciate the effort made by Mr. Morazzo to draw every snowflake in the foreground with a unique appearance instead of taking the easy way out and drawing the same thing over and over.

This issue ends with a bit of that fairy tale element that I’ve always enjoyed. It will be interesting to see how that is integrated into the last issue.
