‘TMNT Ongoing #70:’ Comic Book Review

Ok.  I’ll be the first to admit it: I’m lost.

No.  Not like the TV show.  I’m lost within IDW’s ongoing world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comic books.  Between their main series against the Earth Protection Force and the Universe series (which has already lasted longer than I thought it would), and all the interweaving of characters in the middle, I can hardly keep up.

But this month brings a big issue for writers Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, and Tom Waltz.  It’s their 70th issue (for their ongoing series at least)!  Either way, that is a major accomplishment, and regardless of my confusion, I still can’t get enough of my childhood favorites.

Last month, we got to know Agent Bishop a bit better.  I must admit, I enjoy when writers do this: give us a deeper look into our villains.  Who they are?  Where do they come from?  What makes them “evil?”  We now know that Agent Bishop’s actions are all to help his frail father.  So, you can imagine Bishop’s hatred for Mutanimals after Hob crosses a line of war…

In TMNT #70, Hob has kidnapped Agent Bishop’s wife and father.  And after our heroes-in-a-half-shell come out of hiding to fight for Hob, I’m gonna have to start using the phrase, “Flank ’em. And spank ’em.”  But after all, Hob just wants his family back.  It’s amazing to see what Bishop will do…for his family…

When good guys become bad guys and bad guys become good guys—those are the kinds of stories I love.  And this TMNT ongoing series is chalk full of those storylines.  I mean, Master Splinter is literally the head of The Foot right now!  I don’t remember seeing that as a kid.  Now add artwork by the popular Mateus Santolouco and colors by Ronda Pattison, and perhaps this series is even better than what I remember from my childhood.

Perhaps…

Until next month,
#TurtlePower
