‘Scapula and the Sinister Monster Doom Legion:’ Comic Book Review (Taking Over All the Planets in the World)

Indie comics have always been a haven for the oddball, bizarre, and subversively humorous. Scapula and the Sinister Monster Doom Legion (created, written, and illustrated by Aidan Casserly) definitely checks off each one of those categories, and its lead character, while definitely earning his title of “the world’s worst villain,” has his own unique version of scummy, dirtbag charm that will certainly connect with specific readers who love crass, underdog baddies with lots of ambition.

SPOILERS BELOW

Scapula and the Sinister Monster Doom Legion, as expected, covers the origin of Scapula, a prisoner who becomes a supervillain due to ghastly medical experimentation conducted by a mad neo-Nazi scientist, but the character’s creation is covered in a single page and the rest of the book is a bounty of Scapula-focused content and adventures. Feeling like a merger between an indie comic anthology and an issue of MAD magazine, Scapula and the Sinister Monster Doom Legion features several wacky adventures involving our consistently underperforming “big bad” wannabe, a peek inside his HQ/wax museum, character breakdowns, and a ton of acerbic laughs.

While, personally, I didn’t love every second of Scapula, It would be disingenuous of me to not admit that the book made me laugh out loud more than once and, by the end, I had been won over by the disgusting, despicable, and somehow charismatic lead character. Scapula, himself, seems to be cut from the same cloth as Michael Keaton’s “ghost with the most” from Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice and, while some of the boorish humor didn’t impress, Casserly pours a lot of heart (and fun pop culture references) into his creation and that makes all the difference.

Casserly definitely excels when it comes to the artwork present in Scapula and the Sinister Monster Doom Legion. Cartoony and expressive, Casserly’s style is fun to follow and full of vibrant colors and exciting visuals. He easily shifts tonally as an artist as the work requires and demonstrates true talent in this department. This is the kind of book you’d come across in Artist Alley, flip through, and decide to purchase it based on the fun and engaging art alone.

FINAL VERDICT: Scapula and the Sinister Monster Doom Legion is a book that will be treasured by the right readers. If you dig the blend of dark and gross mixed with the in-your-face wackiness that defines stories and characters like those in Beetlejuice or Aqua Teen Hunger Force, then I’d suggest setting a date to “take over all the planets in the world” with Scapula.

Scapula and the Sinister Monster Doom Legion is currently available for purchase on ComiXology and on the official Scapula website!

That’s all for now, my fellow comic book sniffers.
