‘The Weatherman #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

I have no idea what the hell I just read, only that it was insane…ly good and completely, utterly insane. Mars. 2770. A technologically advanced human civilization is mourning the loss of the inhabitants of Earth. This is a different Mars than what we’re used to seeing on the Rover. Grass and freeways littered throughout cityscapes. In the midst of it all, a news weatherman, Nathan Bright, gives the weather like a rock star as shock jock. People love him. He’s a celebrity.

He’s also a bit of a buffoon. He’s going on a second date with Amanda. He doesn’t do that often. From there, things go to hell in a way that would only make Philip K. Dick or Alejandro Jodorowsky proud. Nathan Bright is a modern-day DiFool from the Incal. The final ten pages are an absolute blast as we’re slung shot into a situation we could not have seen coming.

It’s a manic first issue that fits comfortably in its own shoes. Nathan Fox (artist) gives this world motion, so even when we’re sitting still, you’re caught up in the gale of an ever-forward-moving wind. Dave Stewart (colorist extraordinaire) gives us a vibrant Mars, one that is healthy, young, and a place where anything could happen. You feel a sense of hope, even if the societal rumblings are anything but. Jody LeHeup (writer) gifts us something new, new, new with each and every line of dialogue and every panel. By the time we’ve finished the issue, our heads are full of so much about this world and these characters that it’s enough to fill 3 issues of most other comics. You’ve just had thirds and want to go back to the buffet immediately.

This comic is worth spending money on and holding in your hands. This is a comic that one would be proud to own.
