‘Kasai #1: The Homecoming’ - Comic Book Review

In a world of superpowers, realistically, not everyone would take up the mantle of a hero or a villain. A lot of them would probably go into sports. That’s the concept explored by SFC Comics, and the titles they release, like Kasai.

The SFC (Super Fighting Championship) is a league of superpowered fighters, competing in matches against one another. One of these fighters is Kasai, who uses the power of fire to dominate in the ring. The problem is, she has trouble connecting with the audience, loses her contract, and is sent back home to Kyoto, Japan. There, she finds that her father, who is a bona fide fire god, is competing in superpowered fights himself—fighting against other gods to raise money for charity, against the better judgment of just about everyone else involved.

This issue doesn’t really go into the SFC itself or what it’s all about. Instead, it throws you right into the middle of things, which I think helped me to engage with the comic a lot more easily. I did a bit of research afterwards to get the background details, but they’re not really necessary to the enjoyment of this story. The main focus is on Kasai and her interactions with her family. Though at the end of the issue, there are preview pages for a couple of other titles in the SFC line which do help you get a better idea of what it’s all about.

In general, this comic is a lot of fun and a great start to what promises to be a really great story. We get to see a couple of cool superpowered fights, including one between two gods, and explore a bit of the world Kasai lives in which is fascinating. There’s also a talking lizard who watches too much BBC. Honestly, the comic would be worth reading for that alone.

If you’re into superpowers and/or sports, then you’ll definitely want to check this one out. For me, I really look forward to seeing what happens next.
