In this issue, time-displaced jewel thief Mia Corsair and socially awkward hacker Brenda “Killa-B” are looking to complete the heist that Mia began 30 years ago—the legendary Web of Indra. Along the way, they’d also like to figure out just who set Mia up 30 years ago, sending her into suspended animation. That’s secondary, though. Most important is the heist. You’ve got to have priorities.
In their quest for information about both, they find themselves looking up Mia’s old fence, Dart Braun—now living in a retirement home under an assumed name. His memory and most of his faculties are long gone, but he may still prove to be a useful source of information.
After that, it’s time to see Mia’s white whale in person, sneaking into the high-class, high-profile event where the Web of Indra is on display and casing the security. Mia has done this sort of recon operation a hundred times. Brenda, clearly, has not.
The best part of this comic is the interaction between the two main characters. Their strengths and weaknesses complement each other perfectly, and their back-and-forth banter, occasionally peppered with both 1990s and 1960s references, is funny and entertaining.
Honestly, the heist is secondary in this story. The main focus is Mia and Brenda’s awkward partnership and unlikely friendship. The heist, and the time travel, were what drew me in initially, but it’s the characters that have kept me coming back and made me excited to see where this story goes next. If you’re a fan of odd couple, fish-out-of-water buddy comedies which also feature jewel heists and time travel, you’ll definitely want to check out Smooth Criminals.
