‘Black Hammer ’45: From the World of Black Hammer #3’ – Advance Comic Book Review

The Tuskegee Airmen are the prime influence for Black Hammer ’45, as a squadron of pilots during Black Hammer’s version of WWII. This version of WWII is bonkers in all of the perfect ways. Superheroes and supervillains weave in and out, giving us some chaotically fun dog fights, with giants guarding the borders of countries, Russians marching along in giant mech suits, and in the midst of this, the heroes of the Black Hammer squadron doing their best to complete their mission – sans powers.

This is the first issue in which racism has been directly broached, and the idea of a superhero being racist is an unsettling thought. It’s not how you want to see your heroes, but, in a way, sadly, it’s the most realistic element of this book so far. A lot of people from that era were racist, many of whom sacrificed their lives in WWII are were deemed heroes. While no character is pointed out as being racist specifically, the thought now exists within this world.

With that, the conversation of the series in the present day – that the vets of Black Hammer Squadron are having with a superhero vet – takes on a weight and realism that could have easily been tip-toed around or not approached at all. I have great respect for this creative team, but, after this issue, that respect has taken on a solemnity. In this fantastical setting, they have given the Tuskegee Airmen and all soldiers of color a proper salute.
