‘Bernie Wrightson: Artifact Edition’ – Hardcover Review

This is an extremely well-crafted collection of Bernie Wrightson’s artwork that he created while working for DC Comics in the 1970s.  The creators of this collection put the attention and detail into the books that his artwork warranted.  The reproduction of his original artwork is of such fine quality that one can see beautiful, hand-crafted details from brush strokes to press type.

Very simply put, Bernie Wrightson was one of the greatest artists of all time, not only within the comic book medium but in any form of creative expression.  These 152 pages capture some of his greatest work while under the DC flag, and it does not leave Wrightson fans wanting.  Part of the charm of Wrightson’s work is that it was truly hand crafted with a passion for the love of the art itself that is likely to never be recreated in our commercial world.  His work is breathtaking – every single panel – and what is special about this book is the reverence for his work which was created in a time when there were no superhero movies or alternative tracks to wealth.  His work was created in a time when comic book artists loved their medium and their craft and were so completely focused and in a state of rapture with the work that timeless magic was created.  Each page deserves a place in the Louvre, but knowing this will never happen, one can comfort oneself with this book.
