Fanbase Press is honored to announce that its alternate history series, Nuclear Power, has been named as a finalist for the 2022 Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics. The prestigious annual award is given to an American comic book that has shown a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The prize is named in honor of Dwayne McDuffie (Static Shock, Damage Control, Justice League Unlimited, Ben 10), a creator known for writing, editing, and producing comics and animation, as well as co-founding the pioneering minority-owned-and-operated comic book company, Milestone Media, which focused on underrepresented minorities in American comics. The ceremony for the 2022 Dwayne McDuffie Award will take place virtually this year and will again be hosted by veteran voice actor Phil LaMarr.
Nuclear Power is a darkly poignant alternate history of the Cuban Missile Crisis, depicting a United States under authoritarian control which subjects women to mandatory pregnancy screenings and forced abortions. The series was written by Desirée Proctor & Erica Harrell (Marvel’s Voices: Comunidades, Deadshot: Mercy, DC Comics New Talent Workshop) and illustrated by Lynne Yoshii (Marvel’s Voices: Identity, DC’s Gotham Garage, DC Comics New Talent Workshop).
The series was inspired by creators Proctor and Harrell’s shared Cuban background:
“The story is inspired by our mothers’ experience trying to Americanize after the Cuban Missile Crisis, when Cubans were attacked in this country for being the ‘enemy.’ We hope that people take away the idea that we shouldn’t fear others for being different; that we shouldn’t automatically try to destroy what we don’t understand,” notes Proctor and Harrell.
The Nuclear Power collected trade paperback features a foreword by Dr. Katie Monnin (writer – Teaching Graphic Novels, Diamond Bookshelf’s “Katie’s Korner”) and a study guide by Dr. Stephen J.C. Andes (Associate Professor of History – Louisiana State University / writer – Zorro’s Shadow). The bonus content offers readers, educators, and librarians the opportunity to utilize Nuclear Power as an educational resource for examining challenging topics like disinformation and xenophobia, providing opportunities for greater discussion and understanding. To that end, the Nuclear Power trade paperback has recently been adopted into Modesto Junior College’s English 103: Advanced Composition course taught by Dr. Theresa Rojas (Founding Director, The Latinx Comic Arts Festival).
This year, Nuclear Power was announced the winner of the 2022 International Latino Book Awards, as well as a winner of the 2022 IPPY Awards, both within the graphic novel category.

Sixty years later, the remaining 13 states rose from the ashes to form the American Union, governed by the authoritarian Joint Chiefs of Staff and protected by a border wall to keep out nuclear radiation . . . and the individuals who were enhanced by it. Nuclear Power is a darkly poignant alternate history tale that posits the lengths to which a government will go to protect (or deceive) its citizens. When the Joint Chiefs’ dark secrets are revealed, will survivors on both sides of the wall join forces to fight for their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, or will their differences forever divide them?
