‘Venus #4:’ Advance Comic Book Review

The final issue of the first arc of Venus should be called “The Things We Can’t Leave Behind,” such as the worst humanity has to offer. We can send ourselves into space, looking for hope, but humanity will never be able to leave behind its worst impulses – greed and ambition at any cost – literally sabotaging ourselves at every step of the way.

Venus plays at some of the best science fiction, exploring who we are but putting us into situations that test the fabric of humanity itself, watching it tear and mend itself.

The most impressive thing about the book is it does this through the finely written characters: what they want, who they are, and what they’re trying to prove. And, when it’s kept ambiguous, it’s done for a reason. This game of chess is what keeps you on the edge of your seat, unable to determine who is on which side and what the sides are, though we get a really big clue for one in this issue.

The creative team of Rick Loverd, Huang Danlan, Marcio Menyz, and Colin Bell have created a fun and involving sci-fi adventure read, and whenever they’re ready to produce more, I’ll be there to read it.
