A Fangirl’s Christmas (and/or Hanukkah) Shopping Guide

For many Fanboys (and Fangirls) in the geek ‘verse, it may be difficult to find the “right” holiday gift for your female companion during this festive time of year.  This daunting task can often prove to be more challenging if said significant other does not share your affinity for all things comic-related.

Well, fear no more!  As the Coolest Geek Girl Ever, I submit to you a number of holiday gift ideas that will not only warm your sweetie’s heart but will also have them venturing deep into geek territory.  (I know; you can thank me later.)

For the feminist female readers:
Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan:  Imagine a world where every male mammal (except for one man and one Capuchin monkey) died simultaneously and inexplicably!  What would women do without them?!  Vaughan’s ten-book series explores just that as we follow the travels of Yorick Brown, Earth’s last surviving male, as he searches the globe for his girlfriend.

For the Nora Roberts fans:
Blankets by Craig Thompson: Author Craig Thompson wrote this autobiographical graphic novel in an effort to describe his childhood, his first love, and the trials of growing up.  The art is simply beautiful, and the story is a tear-jerker for sure.  In fact, you may want to give your gal the book with a box of tissues.

For the Hello Kitty fanatics:
Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O’Malley:  This six-book series is quick and easy to read, plus the books are so tiny that your cutie could fit them into her Hello Kitty purse!  Scott Pilgrim chronicles a young, Canadian layabout who splits his time between his fledgling band (Sex Bob-omb) and pining after the new American girl in town, Ramona.  Pilgrim must defeat Ramona’s seven evil exes in order to win her hand.  With a manga look to its art, the series is writhe with 80s pop culture references.  (Plus, you can always rent the movie.)

Alright, kids.  Let’s say that your holiday honey is a bit more adventurous with her reading list.  If you are feeling feisty and think that she’ll be able to appreciate these die-hard comic must-reads, then, by all means, give it a shot!

WE3 by Grant Morrison:  In this one-shot, three innocent pets (a cat, a dog, and a rabbit) are mutated into killer cyborgs by a secret military program.  After escaping from the testing facility, the animals must overcome their programming and their looming captors to find a new home, wherever that may be.  (Hint:  If the plot doesn’t interest her, remind her that it is extremely pro-animal rights and... it has a doggy, a kitty, and a bunny.)

Terminator by Zack Whedon:  This comic miniseries follows Kyle Reese in the weeks before he jumps to 1984 to save Sarah Connor.  Written by Joss Whedon’s younger sibling, Zack, this series does an excellent job of pairing high-octane action with heart-wrenching love stories.  If your lady seems squeamish, tell her that it’s romantic and has lots of naked men!
