The Kickstarter Report: ‘Elan Vital’

For listeners to Fanboy Comics’ flagship podcast, The Fanboy Scoop: Week in Review, you will already be familiar with comic book writer, artist, and editor Siike Donnelly.  (He recently appeared on the latest episode with OSSM Comics colleague Omar Spahi.)  Siike first became a friend of FBC in 2012, when he launched a Kickstarter campaign for Solestar, an original graphic novel featuring artwork donated by 60 different artists and educational information regarding brain aneurysms, the proceeds of which will go to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.  Those who know Siike are aware that he is a survivor of a brain aneurysm, and that he has spent the past four years helping other survivors and educating the world about the need for further aneurysm research.  After the success of his Solestar Kickstarter campaign, Siike has again launched an ambitious crowdfunding campaign for his latest book, Elan Vital, and he needs your help to make this amazing project a reality.

Elan Vital is part art book, part graphic novel, and part love letter.  The story follows Elan, the first robot to possess a soul, who is tasked by his makers to prove that the soul has truly become a part of him through the demonstration of his creativity.  Along the way, Elan evokes memories that belonged to the original bearer of the soul, challenging him to not only embrace his soul and its effects, but to find what it is to have his own identity.  For Elan Vital‘s creator, who was an artist before his brain aneurysm, finding his own identity and returning to his artwork have proved to be immense challenges, as his lack of visual memory forces him to draw “in the moment.”   The link between Elan and Siike is a remarkable one, and readers will no doubt value the journey of Elan throughout the book, as it chronicles Siike’s own incredible journey.

The Kickstarter campaign for Elan Vital has already met its fundraising goal; however, further funding will allow the story to expand into further areas of transmedia, which are detailed on the project’s campaign page.

Be sure to visit the Elan Vital Kickstarter page, and don’t forget to check out the backer rewards, which include signed copies of the book, signed prints of the artwork, and the chance to have artwork included within the book! The Kickstarter campaign will close on Sunday, May 4th, so be sure to donate soon!
