Favorite TV Show: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Given the recent splurge of YA fiction properties (and, more specifically, dystopian YA fiction properties) in both bookstores and cinemas, it’s easy to understand how even a dedicated geek and proud Whedonite could dismiss Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games series as just another part of the latest pop culture trend. As a life-long geek and hard-core Whedon fan since Buffy: Season One, I wish to stress that Collins’ unflinching and imaginative novels are closer to Orwell’s powerful 1984 than Meyer’s sparkle-infested Twilight books, and Hunger Games heroine Katniss Everdeen is following in the footsteps of everyone’s favorite blonde vampire slayer in more ways than one!

It’s Halloween, and that means, once again, it’s time to start thinking scary. The classic sci-fi horror flick, Alien, has always been near and dear to my heart and, in my opinion, one of the scariest films of all time. In fact, unlike most comic book fans who found their passion for “the pulp” in the superhero genre, it was my obsession at a young age with the (then) Alien Trilogy that lead me to seek out Dark Horse Comics’ Aliens comic line of the early '90s, open the pages in hushed awe, and start a life-long addiction. The original film, Alien, is an intense, terrifying, and masterfully crafted example of both the best of science-fiction and horror genres.

The creative team of writer Christos Gage and artist Rebekah Isaacs have been rockin’ it for some time now on their eight-issue (so far) run on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 10, but the latest issue reached a new level in terms of awesome art and bold, well-crafted storytelling! Buffy: Season 10 #8 is also Dark Horse’s Halloween issue and features a few “tricks” and the notable “treat” of an unexpected return to Sunnydale!

Monomyth #3, the final chapter of writer Siike Donnelly and artist Eric Ninaltowski’s epic, alternate take on Biblical mythology, is released this week and ends OSSM Comics’ standout miniseries with the same energy, passion, and solid storytelling that have been present throughout all three issues. If you haven’t picked up this distinct and surprising comic book, don’t despair, for there is still time to enter this Garden of Eden!

The indie comics scene has become even more diverse in content and plot over the past few years. Much like the current state of television (which is being labeled a “Golden Age” by some), indie comics are attempting to reach a much wider audience these days, and the spoils of this trend come in the form of original, unexpected, and exciting comics like the newly released Dayglow, created by David Hahn and published by Publish Enemies.
