‘Cosmic Force Volume 1:’ TPB Review

The night is dark, and full of meteors.

Allen Carter has created his own super team, and this first volume collects the origins of this force.  Set in Hawaii, five strangers find themselves in the same field watching a once-in-a-century meteor shower, but burning space rocks aren’t the only things plummeting into the atmosphere.  Chased down by five colored orbs, our stargazers find themselves awakening many miles, and many moons, away from where they started.

Carter has done a great job of doing a super-origin story; each person deals with their suddenly manifesting gifts like anyone would, by freaking out just a bit.  Each member has their own power, and Carter keeps it close to the vest just what they’re each completely capable of.  We get to discover their powers as they do, keeping the action and mystery of just what happened pretty tight.  It’s not long before the group is tracked down by slightly overzealous FBI and military personnel, and we find that the commander of the Airfield is surprisingly ready to deal with powered individuals, with weapons and armor, ready to challenge our heroes and put them to the test.

There’s a lot of good stuff in this book, and fans of certain superhero teams will certainly enjoy Mr. Carter’s offering to the genre.  With fun banter and swifter-than-average law enforcement officers, he keeps his heroes and us readers on our toes.  There’s a good pace to the action, and he continually answers questions with a little info that leads to more questions, all in the best way.  Carter’s art style is organic and clear, with a good sense of action and moments of wonder on the faces of our transforming heroes.

If you’re looking for a good, indie super-story, and generally dig superpowers and mysteries, then this is definitely a series for you.

Share the stories that move you.
