A Love Letter to Jack Shephard from ‘Lost’

Love is in the air at Fanboy Comics! In this magical month of romance and enchantment, the FBC Staff and Contributors decided to take a moment to stop and smell the roses. In the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, a few members of the Fanboy Comics crew will be sharing their very personal “Love Letters” with our readers, addressed to the ones that they adore the most.

Dear Jack Shephard,

You were wrong.
You were wrong, but that’s okay.
It wasn’t your fault!

As a major fan of J.J. Abrams’ Lost, because of you I got six amazing, weird, intense, time-traveling, edge-of-your-seat seasons out of a TV show that should have ended in one. And again, it’s not your fault that viewers of Lost became so obsessed with the show that we figured out you and your friends were “lost” in Limbo the whole time, forcing the series’ creators to give us six seasons before admitting what we already knew. And again, it’s not your fault that the writers of Lost never planned to answer some of the questions they laid out in the first season, like, for example, what was the black smoke? Or why was there a polar bear on a jungle-like island? It’s not your fault that the writers made us wait six seasons before we found out the answers to such silly questions. In truth, I blame the obsessive audience for instigating the writers to make us wait for answers, answers which usually only presented more questions.

But, Jack, you–yes, YOU–you made Lost enjoyable for us.  You and Kate and Sawyer and Locke and Hurley and Charlie and Sayid and Sun and Jin and that Australian chick who always seemed to be pregnant even though she gave birth in season one and Rose and Bernard and Desmond and even Benjamin Linus (basically everyone but Shannon). Because of you, Dr. Shephard, and all your friends, ABC gave us one of the greatest television shows in the history of that tiny box that now sits in all of our living rooms.

And, yes.  Sometimes, you trusted in the wrong people.  On the island.  In life.  In J.J. Abrams.  (Alright, who am I kidding? I LOVE me some J.J. Abrams!)  But, despite the fact that you didn’t always have the answers, and despite the fact that you hated being wrong, you led, Jack.  You led an entire group of people through a traumatic experience. You led them through their own sorrows and troubles.  Through the good and the bad.  They looked to you, Jack.  Even when they strayed and followed John Locke (or the smoke monster for that matter), they always came back to you . . .

So, know this, Doctor:

You made Lost an amazing experience.  To us, the fans, it was more than just a television show.   Your show made us think.  Your show made us feel.  Your show made us care for people we would never have known otherwise. People we hated. People we grew to love. People like you.

We love you, Jack Shephard.

I love you.

I love you hard . . .
