‘Adventure Time: The Flip Side #2’ – Advance Comic Book Review (We’re Bringing in a Specialist . . . and His Evil Penguin)

Back when I first heard about this series and Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover’s plans to genre hop, this is exactly what I had in mind. Adventure Time jumps straight into the heist genre as Finn and Jake team up with the Ice King and Gunter as part of their reversed quest that requires them to persuade the Monkey Wizard to kidnap Princess Painting.

This is such an intelligently written comic, exhibiting twists on dozens of heist film tropes, an ever-changing scenario that manages to keep each scene feeling fresh, and the delightfully random touches of Adventure Time. In particular, the Ice King’s explanation of things such as the stranger effects of taking a reverse quest, namely that things get reversed, is particularly random and a great bit of non-sequitur humor.

The art of Wook Jin Clark continues to be a brilliant fit for Adventure Time. His style matches the tone of the show perfectly, and his rendition of the Adventure Time universe in the style of a heist film is wonderful, hitting all of the iconic scenes in their light and bubbly way, and inserting more subtle tips of the hat to the genre than can be found in a single read. Also, I sincerely doubt anyone can draw a security guard elbow dropping an owl as well as he can.
