‘Everybody Loves Tank Girl:’ Hardcover Review

Everybody Loves Tank GirlYou don’t just read Everybody Loves Tank Girl by Alan C. Martin and Jim Mahfood, you enter into it, like some passionate, beer-drenched, shotgun wedding.  And, you can be sure that hearts will be broken, curses will rain down like a plague, lovers will be shot, and people will fight and f–k and die, and through it all, Tank Girl and her man (er, kangaroo) Booga will be there to lend a helping hand grenade.

From the cover of this seductive hardbound graphic novel, depicting tank girl in a bikini, button-clad, ammo vest, and her trademark goggles, tenderly smooching a massive automatic rifle, you understand what you’re getting.  And, if you’re like me, you love it.

Inside this book is a treasure trove of brand, baby-spanking new stories, poems, and comedic self-help guides from one of the creators of Tank Girl, Alan C. Martin.  While it contains some narrative storytelling, the graphic novel is more of a hodgepodge of ideas, social commentary, and personal philosophy.  Martin clearly has a lot to say, but insists on not leading the reader by the hand, instead he opts to prod you and poke you and pour funny smelling liquid that you’re pretty sure might be animal urine all over your pretty little assumptions.

Jim Mahfood, aka Food One, takes Martin’s writing to a delicious new level with his sketchy, rough-around-the-edges, but incredibly detailed and provocative art.  There are plenty of splash pages here with endless amounts of entertaining minutiae lurking in the dark corners of Mahfood’s inky art.  Mahfood has also included “unofficial soundtracks” to each of the stories, listing artists he was listening to while drawing, including Bad Brains, The Specials, Toro y Moi, and so many more!

Mahfood’s art with Martin’s storytelling is a match made in heaven, which in this case is a hazy London pub with bottomless cider and crisps.  Everybody Loves Tank Girl is an edgy, amazing, new publication from the classically current Titan Books.  So, go and buy it. Don’t think, don’t reason, just pucker up and say, “I do.”
