Whereas Danger Girl comics often open with over-the-top action, this one chooses, instead, to build up suspense. The girls are tailing an enemy agent—a mysterious woman with sunglasses and a tattoo—through the crowded streets of Shanghai, waiting for her to rendezvous with someone and receive a briefcase. It’s the job of the Danger Girl team to intercept this briefcase and bring it back to their leader, Deuce. But, Deuce refuses to tell them what the contents of the briefcase are. Only that it’s vital that they obtain it, and not damage the case at all.
Of course, it goes without saying that they lose the briefcase. You can guess that just from the title. This adventure is going to be about them chasing after it. Though, of course, there’s a good deal more to the story than that, even just in this first issue, which you’d be better off reading for yourself.
This issue has all the things we’ve come to expect from Danger Girl. Action, adventure, cool gadgets, strong and capable heroines in tight clothing, and just a touch of humor that shows it’s not taking itself too seriously. The Chase #1 sets up a story that seems like it’s going to be compelling and fun. It is so far, anyway, and there’s a lot of potential for future developments. It looks like it might even be leaning a bit towards sci-fi or even fantasy, though we’ll have to wait until the next issue to know for sure.
If you’re into Danger Girl, this is a fun and entertaining comic that won’t disappoint. If you haven’t read any Danger Girl comics before but are into action, adventure, and secret agents, then I highly recommend the series in general, and this one is as good a place as any to start. There’s not a lot of backstory to know beyond the basic premise, which is recapped at the beginning of the issue, and the main characters, all of whom are introduced quickly in the narration.
All-in-all, this is a solid comic and worth reading. And, I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next issue.
