‘Cloaks #1:’ Comic Book Review

Stories about magicians tend to be a lot of fun. They provide the thrill of watching a master at their craft, pulling off the seemingly impossible right before our eyes. Not only that, but, unlike actual magic shows, once it’s over, they give us that briefest glimpse into just how they pulled it off, and rather than spoil the trick for us, it just makes our jaws drop even further. I’m a big fan of magic, both in real life and in fiction. So, I must say, I’m very excited about this new comic miniseries, Cloaks.

Acclaimed magician John Blackstone dies, leaving his teenaged apprentice Adam D’Aquino, whom he has raised like a son, all alone and at the mercy of the foster care system. Four years later, D’Aquino has found his own niche in the magical world—part David Blaine, part Robin Hood. He dons a mask to perform impromptu street magic shows around New York City, while simultaneously using his sleight-of-hand skills to rob from the rich and give to the poor. But, are his skills in magic enough to keep him a step ahead of the law?

This first issue is great fun, giving us action, intrigue, magic, mayhem, and more. The story, by Caleb Monroe, is well written and compelling, and the artwork, by Mariano Navarro, is vibrant and colorful. If you like magic (and really, who doesn’t?), you’ll want to check out Cloaks. I, for one, look forward to seeing what hocus pocus the next issue has in store.
