‘Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency: A Spoon Too Short #4’ – Comic Book Review

We’re nearing the end of this story arc, and Dirk has just about solved the case of the people who have lost all communication. In the previous issue, we learned that the victims of this strange occurrence respond to music. Now, Dirk just has to perform one final, elaborate test to get to the bottom of exactly what’s happening and why, and stop it once and for all. Oh, and Tamasha Travers and Madluck Biggun, Dirk’s two traveling companions on this adventure, have to have sex.

Yes, a good portion of this issue is a somewhat awkward and rather hilarious sex scene. I’d say gratuitous, but it actually is connected to what’s going on. I mean, of course it is. Dirk believes in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things, after all.

This has been a rather interesting adventure all through. There aren’t nearly as many characters or plot threads as the previous Dirk Gently arc, making it a lot easier to keep track of. The plot threads are fairly unique and interesting, too. I love the fact that music is the key to everything. Douglas Adams certainly would have approved.

The flashback to Dirk’s early years at the beginning of the issue is rather interesting as well. Each issue in this arc has begun with a brief scene from Dirk’s rather unusual childhood. The scenes have been a little weird and a little disjointed and generally (seemingly) wholly unrelated to the rest of the action. This issue starts to bring it all somewhere, though, by showing us a clip from Dirk’s time at St. Cedd’s College, Cambridge. In fact, it’s a scene that anyone who’s read the first book should be familiar with—but I’ll just let you see that for yourself.

We have only one issue left in this arc to bring everything together. As I said at the beginning, the case is just about solved, so that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. This issue does raise some rather interesting questions, though, so I look forward to seeing them answered in the conclusion.
