Fanbase Press’ Geeky Love Letters: A Love Letter to d20 (and All of the Other Dice, Too)

Love is in the air at Fanbase Press! In this magical month of romance and enchantment, the Fanbase Press Staff and Contributors decided to stop and smell the roses. Throughout the week of Valentine’s Day, a few members of the Fanbase Press crew will be sharing their personal love letters to the areas of geekdom they adore the most.

My dearest d20,

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? I wouldn’t know, I’ve never seen you two in the same place at the same time, but in the glow of cloth-covered lamps in a basement, your form is always in my sight. Love can be a fickle thing, and oh my dear Icosahedron… you are mercurial, aren’t you? The danger of you letting me flail miserably in a pit of lava unable to climb out matches the sheer exhilaration as you let me pull off an impossible task. Now, they say that a real person has curves, but your triangular facets are the epitome of perfection to me. Your sharp edges cut my mind, the way you tease whilst bouncing about the tray… enticing me to watch nothing but you. Every roll is like the first time: breath catches in my throat, my pulse pounds as I calculate probabilities, my eyes widen to see where you land.

Now, sometimes, I add some modifiers to you, but only to accentuate your natural beauty; they are nothing without you. I know when you’ve had enough of that, landing on the two numbers that obliterate all modifiers and just let your brilliance shine on its own. The swing between the ecstasy and agony of those moments… pure rapture.

I know that we’ve had some moments of… tension. You aren’t in the mood, and I get that. Me putting you to the side is only to let us take the time to rekindle what we have—to allow rest and contemplation to ignite our love once again. I know that it rings hollow to see me rolling another in your stead, but it only fuels me to rejoin you once I’m fully ready for your magnificence. You’re my true love, and those other dice… they are but appetizers to your greatness.

My wonderful (other) d20,

You know that I keep you hidden away, my secret love. You are not some die meant for menial tasks like climbing and dodging Fireballs. You are meant for the greatest of moments, and never once have you let me down. Sometimes, when we’re rolling advantage, well, it’s a lot of fun with both of you.

My lovely d12,

We don’t see each other often, but when the time is right, you are there, ready to slam fools and take a beating doing it. You’re my wild motorcycle ride, an adventure all to yourself every time. I wish that every roll was with you.

My exquisite d10,

We certainly do have fun, don’t we? Versatility is your best feature, and it allows us to get both hands on situations where I’d be lost on my own without you. So many don’t understand you, thinking that your best feature is actually naught… what fools they are that don’t see and breathe your magnificence.

My eccentric Percentile Die,

I don’t know how to quantify our love.  I see you so infrequently, and usually just before some really random things go down. Just when I think I have us figured out, you’re gone again, and though it means the rest of my life is much more stable… I admit… I miss the excitement.

My sinuous d8,

So many want to be with you. I feel like the luckiest on the planet that I’m yours. You elevate those around you. When you arrive, things get serious. You always make excellent points, and when I can trust nothing else, I know that you’ll be there for me.

My solid d6,

So many people overlook the neighborly beauty you exude. People make memes about you wearing Uggs or getting your pumpkin spice, but you aren’t interested in throwing yourself into the world like so many others. You hide your secrets for those willing to spend time with you. I don’t think that you’re just for the board. You’ll always be by my side, and I cantrip without you.

My pointy d4,

You can be hard to pick up; I can’t get a grip on your surface. I also stepped on you once, and that betrayal was like a dagger to the heart. Well, to the foot. That really hurt. Why is it that you’re always the first to fall and the worst to find with an exposed metatarsal? For real, that hurt. Limped for two days.

To all of my amazing dice,

I can’t pick just one of you. My life, my very HP would be nothing without the vibrant symphony we weave while together. Sure, I spent most of my time with the 20s, but they can’t fulfill the special place that the rest of you excel in. A die in every tray, and I’m a happy gamer. Free gaming for all! Now, let’s go find some loot.

Your dearly beloved,
Erik
