Wonder Woman Wednesday: Sequel Fever Continues!

Happy 4th of July, Wonder peeps! I hope everyone is having a great time celebrating our country’s independence.  As our rights and freedoms continue to be threatened on a daily basis, it’s a good time to reflect on what it really means to be an American.

With nearly a year and a half away (Did I read that right?) until we are bestowed with the eagerly anticipated sequel to Wonder Woman, the buzz is heating up. Wonder Woman 2 has begun filming, and clues about it have been leaking ever so slightly.

We already know that the film will be set in 1984. (Heck yeah, man!) We know that Patty Jenkins is directing. (Thank, Hera!) We also know that Gal Gadot and Chris Pine will be reprising there roles. With Pine’s character, Steve Trevor, appearing to have died in the first film and with 80-odd years having passed in between films, it is still a mystery how Steve Trevor will be coming back. That’s if it’s even him. Some speculate that he could be the grandson of the original. (Creepy. I don’t want my grandpa’s sloppy seconds!) I think he could have been trapped in the Bermuda Triangle and thrust into the future. These are superheroes, people. They usually don’t stay dead for too long.

We know Kristen Wig will be playing Wonder Woman’s adversary, Barbara Minerva (a.k.a. The Cheetah). I’m nervously optimistic about how she’ll look. It’s extremely important to get the character’s credibility to get it right, but I have faith in Patty Jenkins.

The latest nugget to drop is that the working title for the movie is “Magic Hour,” thus leading speculators to believe that Circe might be the second villain in the film. It wouldn’t suck if it also meant Diana teaming up with the fishnet-clad mage, Zatana. Hmmmm… Usually, I find that the incessant need to include two villains in a film often waters them down to some degree, but I think it will be easy to marry the stories together as Circe is a Sorceress and Cheetah’s origin is steeped in magic.

At any rate, I could not be more excited and cannot wait to see what other clues we’ll be given as filming commences. No spoilers, please!

I could be wrong, but one of the pictures of Gal from the set doing some kind of stunt made me think there might be an invisible jet involved. I think it would be a big mistake to leave it out. It’s been there since the beginning and is truly unique to Wonder Woman’s mythos.

Other photos have Chris Pine in a very ’80s members only jacket and Kristen Wiig dressed like you would expect an archaeologist in the ’80s to look like. (Ask Harrison Ford.) I’m not sure if I’m ready for neon and mall hair to make a comeback. Just kidding! We’re always ready for neon and mall hair!

As epic and thrilling as the first film was, the second installment is shaping up to be a real party-like-its-1999 kind of shindig.

I’ll be sure to clue you in on details as they become available. I hope everyone is as geeked about Wonder Woman 2 as I am!
