Fanbase Press Interviews Spike Trotman on Launching a Crowdfunding Double-Header for ‘Smut Peddler’ with Iron Circus Comics

The following is an interview with Spike Trotman regarding the recent launch of Iron Circus Comics’ crowdfunding campaign double-header in support of Smut Peddler Presents: My Monster Girlfriend and Smut Peddler X: Ten Years of Impeccable Pornoglifics. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Trotman about the experience of returning to the fan-favorite anthology, Iron Circus’ first collaboration with BackerKit, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the recent launch of Iron Circus’ double-feature crowdfunding campaign!  In looking back at the original Smut Peddler collection’s genesis 10 years ago, what do you feel made the project truly unique then, and what do you hope to offer readers with the brand-new anthology, as well as the anniversary edition?

Spike Trotman: Back in the day, comic smut that didn’t disappoint me (and practically every other person I talked to) was a lot tougher to find! There was always lots of it, but it almost always disregarded the pleasure or interest of any women characters involved, or any women potentially reading. That’s how Smut Peddler started out, a push-back against being so thoroughly ignored as a potential audience!

In a lot of ways, we’re still doing that! The small press is a lot more erotica-diverse than it was in 2012, but I think we keep out edge by just… refusing to stop being WEIRD. Weird smut is good smut.

BD: Iron Circus Comics’ titles have been at the forefront of inclusivity, especially when it comes to the representation of individuals across body types, races, genders, kinks, and sexual orientations – both within the pages of its comics and in the makeup of its creators.  What can you share with us about the reader response that you have received over the years from this mindful effort towards inclusivity?

ST: We have people make a beeline for us as conventions (Hey, remember those?) to thank us for that. Profusely. It’s hard to explain to folks who have never experienced it what it’s like going decades without seeing yourself, and/or your desires and preferences, represented in the media you consume. You’re just relieved and excited and grateful in a way you may not have even know you ever wanted or needed.

BD: This crowdfunding campaign will mark your first in collaboration with BackerKit.  Given Iron Circus’ move to an independent crowdfunding model, what can you tell us about your decision to work with BackerKit, and how has it impacted the campaign thus far?

ST: Backerkit approached us first in 2021 to ask us to be part of their beta, but we initially said no! I was too stung by Kickstarter’s turn towards blockchain, and refusal to explain their reasoning behind it. I didn’t want to get caught unawares by another third party I’d come to rely on. But try as we might, we couldn’t access the Backerkit services we were already using for our crowdfunds if we went independent, like their Marketing. We missed that! So, when the opportunity arose again to bring them in on the new Double Header, they hopped right on that, ha ha. And I’m so glad the invitation was still good nearly a year later!

BD: Are there any other Iron Circus projects on which you are working that you are able to share with our readers?

ST: SO glad you asked!

The very first Iron Circus Animation project debuts in the first quarter in 2023! It’s “Lackadaisy,” based on the Eisner-nominated webcomic by Tracy Butler! We funded this on Kickstarter way back in 2020, and for a time, it was Kickstarter’s highest-funded Short Film Project!  After years of hard work from an all-virtual studio and director Fable Siegel, we’re almost ready for our big moment It’s so exciting to move into other  mediums!

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find out more about Smut Peddler Presents: My Monster Girlfriend and Smut Peddler X: Ten Years of Impeccable Pornoglifics and to support the crowdfunding campaign?

ST: Head straight to the Backerkit! We appreciate any and all support, and remember: The higher the project funds, the more the artists make! We’re already past creator page rate pay raise number twenty, and I’m so excited to see where we end up!
