Fanbase Press Interviews Raymond Sanders on the Comic Book Series, ‘Fierce’

The following is an interview with Raymond Sanders regarding the release of the comic book series, Fierce. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Sanders about the inspiration behind the series, what he hopes that readers will take away from his work, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the release of your superhero comic book series, Fierce!  For those who may be unfamiliar, how would you describe the series’ premise, and what inspired you to tell this story?

Raymond Sanders: Fierce is the story of two heroes, one that’s at the end of his crime fighting career and another that’s at the very beginning of his. The Crimson Stalker has been protecting the city of Hugo for over 25 years. He defeated all types of criminals, gangsters, genetic mutants, and more, but the only enemy that he can never defeat is time. With his body aging and his skills fading, he meets a 15-year-old kid named Aaron that’s full of super powers and abilities. Aaron is usually only interested in basketball and girls, but when his friends are attacked, he uses his powers to save them. This begins Aaron’s journey to becoming the city of Hugo’s next protector.

BD: What can you share with us about your creative process in creating and illustrating the series, and what have been some of your creative influences?  Likewise, what you can tell us about your work with the rest of the creative team?

RS: The Fierce series took a few years to develop. I spent over four years practicing my current drawing style while writer Gabriel Smith worked on the story and developing the characters that will appear throughout the series. Leonardo Giron is the colorist on the series, and his work, I believe, has improved my artwork. Jessica Jimerson provides the finishing touches with her amazing lettering. Starting with issue two, we have an outstanding artist named Clement Romain that’s going to take over the inking duties. I grew up studying a number of different artists, but the ones that influenced me the most was my brother Anthony Sanders, Mark Bagley, Erik Larsen, MD Bright, Larry Storman, Jim Valentino, and Ron Frenz.

BD: What do you hope that readers will take away from your work?

RS: I hope that the readers fall in love with the characters just like I did when I read Spider-Man or Thor for the first time. Fierce is a comic book that anyone will be able to pick up and find someone in the story that they can relate to.

BD: How many issues do you have planned for Fierce?

RS: Fierce is an ongoing series. The plan is to release each story arc as seasons. The first story arc or season one will be the first six issues of the series.

BD: If given the opportunity to expand your series into other entertainment mediums, in what format do you hope to see it adapted?

RS: I love seeing superhero movies on the big screen, but I believe a Fierce animated series would work best for the characters. In a movie you have very little time to develop the hero, the villain, and supporting characters. A animated series would allow us time to tell the entire story of not only Fierce, but of the characters in the Fierce universe.

BD: Are there any upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?

RS: Along with the Fierce series, Fantasy Art Comics has a number of titles in production: Swag Patrol by Rubyn Warren, Gabriel Smith, and the Marvida Brothers; Street Sweepers by Anthony Sanders; Shay Dymond by Tim “TAZ” Jeter and David Jaxon, and a few more projects that will be revealed at a later date.

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about Fierce?

RS: Check us out on Facebook and Instagram, and the Fantasy Art Comics website is coming soon.
