Countdown to the Eisners: 2019 Nominees for Best Anthology

Fanbase Press’ coverage of the 2019 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards continues with the “Countdown to the Eisners” series. From Wednesday, May 29, through Wednesday, July 10, 2019, Fanbase Press will highlight each of the Eisner Awards’ 31 nomination categories, providing comic book industry members and readers alike the opportunity to learn more about the nominees and their work. Stay tuned for Fanbase Press’ continued coverage of the Eisner Awards, including live coverage of the ceremony at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 19.


The books nominated in this year’s Best Anthology category feature some of the best writers and artists working in comics today. The Eisner Awards honor the editors that assembled the creators and shepherded their work into a cohesive whole. This category first appeared in 1992, and some recent Best Anthology winners include Elements: Fire – A Comic Anthology by Creators of Color!, edited by Taneka Stotts for Beyond Press and Love is Love, edited by Marc Andreyko for IDW and DC Comics.

Here are the 2019 Eisner Award nominees for the Best Anthology category:

Femme Magnifique: 50 Magnificent Women Who Changed the World edited by Shelly Bond (Black Crown/IDW)

Editor Shelly Bond brought together over one hundred writers and artist from all over the world to tell fifty inspirational vignettes about magnificent women. Each three-page story profiles a different woman, and in a statement to Paste Magazine, Bond explained, “The directive was simple: Write a tribute to your favorite female trailblazer and make it part mini biopic, part personal angle. The end result is magnifique.” The book spotlights female luminaries from different backgrounds and professions. Profiles include Ada Lovelace, Misty Copeland, Carrie Fisher, Michelle Obama, Harriet Tubman, and more!

Puerto Rico Strong edited by Marco Lopez, Desiree Rodriguez, Hazel Newlevant, Derek Ruiz, and Neil Schwartz (Lion Forge)

Puerto Rico Strong is an examination on cultural identity that brought together some of the most prominent Puerto Rican artists and writers. Stories in the collection run the gamut from historical to fantastic. Co-editor Desiree Rodriguez told SyFy Wire, “Puerto Rico has always been an ‘other’ in American history; something not fully acknowledged nor taught. One hope is this anthology can teach others a bit more about our history, culture, and people while also being an entertaining piece of fictional media.” In addition, all proceeds from the book were donated to Hurricane Maria relief organizations.

Twisted Romance edited by Alex de Campi (Image)

In Twisted Romance, maverick writer Alex de Campi presents four unique stories about love and lust, each with their own dark edge. The collection also includes prose short stories by a different writers and illustrated back-up stories by different artists. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, de Campi said, “We’re going to break your heart, fill you with joy, and give you awkward pants feels. Sometimes in the same story. Occasionally, even on the same page.” The anthology was also lauded for its diversity, including characters with different sexual orientations.

Where We Live: A Benefit for the Survivors in Las Vegas edited by Will Dennis, curated by J. H. Williams III and Wendy Wright-Williams (Image)

Curator and Las Vegas resident J.H. Williams III assembled a team of legendary creators to tell the traumatic story of the worst mass shooting in modern American history. Where We Live is a harrowing collection of fictional stories and eye witness accounts that explores themes like common sense gun control, value of a compassionate society, mental health stigmatization, and how individuals and communities persevere following tragedy. Bestselling author and a contributor Neil Gaiman is quoted in a Newsarama article saying, “It’s about wounds and healing, about death and forgiveness, about pain and childhood and the dark. I hope it helps make people think, and I’m honoured to be part of the conversation.” In addition, all proceeds from the book were donated to help survivors of the October 2017 shooting.
